p.1 #1 · Floe Lake (Rockwall) Kootenay National Park

I left work after meetings on Wednesday, going late, and embarked on my 800m 11km hike (with last 4km containing 500m - puff puff puff with my tent lens, tripod, camera...). I hurried up the trail and missed the late light and just had time to set up my tent before it was dark. And then I was too tired/cold to hike in the dark.

So I got up at 5AM and started an 1.5 hour hike in the dark by myself. Did I mention that there was a sow and 2 cubs in the woods here the previous weekend (likely this one too ). Finally I got high enough to find my target picture. You decide if it was worth it but it sure felt like a beautiful scene.

Then I walked back down, meeting my son, who hiked in at 6am from the start of the trail, and went to sleep for 3 hours. Then we walked back up to the pass where my 28 year old son made me dinner while I took pictures. Then back down and a sleep and start all over for in close by Floe Lake.

[just yesterday one of my fellow tenters that I met at the campground said the sow and 2 big cubs were only 100meters from my tent at night so I did not need to worry about them hiking up the hill He saw them as he was leaving ]

I think I walked 50km - and boy was I ready to quit at the end of day friday. Anyway, whether you like them or not - here are my best from the first morning.

Comments and feedback are appreciated. Scott 1-4 of 4

1 - On the Way up the Hill to Numa Pass (actually down but I saw it here in the dark)

2 - Opening into the first area where I could see floe Lake and the Rockwall

3 - Zoomed shot of Floe / Rockwall

4 - Looking back from Numa Pass - Later in the Evening - not great light but beautiful

Very nice, Scott! I especially like the third image, and the final two. The vertical relief in the final image is quite impressive! I think your trip was worth it.

These are phenomenal, Scott. I like the first and the last. The side lighting is awesome in the first and that vertical relief in the last is amazing. I don't know how old you are, but this old guy would not have attempted all that vertical climb in such a few days. Just sayin....

I like the last one. You're lucky you got to go up there - Floe lake is on my bucket list of things I'd like to do one day and looks like you had a great time with your family too!

Lobo howler: Glad you like 1,3 and last ones. It was a great two days. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

kwilliam8: Floe Lake/ Rockwall is a spectacular spot and difficult enough that you have room for your elbows. It was worth it just to take in the scene with my eyes. But as I puffed up the trail by myself at 5am with my headlight, thinking about the sow and 2 cubs - I thought - are you crazy but one foot in front of the other. Glad you like the 3rd and final 2. Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

junglialoh: Glad you like the images and the compositions. It was a great backpack trip. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Jimmkied: Its how you know your heart is still good. I have this fitbit thing and in reading I found that my max heart rate should be 160 - I can look back and see it pinned at 160 when the sun is rising and I am at risk of missing the light. 1600meters ( 5000') in 1.5 days is an accomplishment for me. Glad you like the 1st and last - I think I will look through my photos again - I have some better side lighting. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

warning: Glad you like the last one. It is a location that should be on your bucket list as long as you can get up the hill - and if I can do it - there is hope for everyone. It was fantastic to be up with my son. Its great when you can hang out out with adult children and enjoy life. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

tmiller9: Glad you like the old guy. There were a couple of young(er) photographers who appeared to have brought models ( or girlfriends who liked to model) up with them - having them sit in the water to take pictures. The girls were very nice but it takes a whole lot more talent to make an old guy look good The girls called me camp dad - so unfortunately for you - you have campdad instead of beautiful girls. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

These are beautiful Scott, well worth the dangerous hike in the dark and the agony of being called camp dad by beautiful young models.

DaleBerlin: Glad you think they are beautiful. I don't mind Camp-Dad - its endearing and they are about the same age as my daughters. And the hike in the dark was probably less dangerous than the drive. So I am glad you like them. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Harland: Glad you like it. It was a bit of work to get there with the last 3km being the majority of the 750m of elevation gain. But I am willing to do backpack it again with you on a warmer day for the milky way shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Beautiful images Scott. That sounded like quite a walk. Glad you were able to complete it and shoot these images. Liked the balance in the first image. Liked the last one as well. The human element really adds to the frame. Would have loved this at a slightly earlier time and with a little less of the haze on the left but it is a good shot nonetheless.
Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful shots. I was just there but didn't hike that far. I also explored Yoho NP, which has a lot to offer. Anyway your shots are great. If I may suggest.... I would make sky little darker to set the mountain apart. But this is just small suggestions and something I would do. They look great the way they are as well....

Mark Metternich: Its an amazing occurrence when someone loves a picture I am in - 57 years and climbing Glad you like my style and shots. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

zurura: Glad you like the last. I agree that earlier could have been better but I was by myself and never like to see myself in pictures - it was an afterthought that turned out well. Glad you like it. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

CW100: Glad you like the set. It was a fantastic weekend. Much appreciated. Scott

Gregg B: Thanks for the suggestions. It is time to go back and look at the processing of the pictures. Yoho is great. I will go look for your posts. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
