I think it is glue between layers of the sensor stack. You can expose them at narrow apertures and blue sky. When you pull darks down they show. Now everyone can say no one will see them in normal shooting conditions, but they should not be there. And i have not seen these on any other camera model. Also the amount of these brush lines vary between models. I have seen sensors that show very few lines and some that are full with it. And once you know they are there, you'll start seeing them on more normal conditions as

I see, I will try to take a shot next time going out shooting

Hi

I didn’t go through the 18 pages of posts here but I too have the problem. I got one of the first 1DXII’s when they were released. I never really saw the problem as I typically shoot open apertures. However I was on a photo trip doing a lot of landscapes/seascapes and the problem presented itself. Ruined many of my photos as it was just too labor intensive to try and clean them in PS.

I sent to canon for cleaning and they sent it back with about 30% of the spots still remaining. Sent it back again and they replaced the CMOS sensor. That was last month. Been busy but just tested it again at f/22 and spots are appearing mostly in the top left corner of image again.

My camera is way past warranty now as I didn’t realize I never purchased the extended warranty, but I have platinum membership and hope they will consider a body replacement as it must be the shutter or mirror box causing this. Otherwise I am extremely angry for having purchased a flagship $6K product that is supposed to be tough as nails and able to shoot in just about any conditions thrown at it, but produces unusable images because of a ridiculous lubrication or shutter mechanism problem that should be easily remedied. I think a recall is in order.

To simplest way I found to identify the problem is to shoot a white piece of paper placed about a foot in front of lens @ f/22. I process that photo in Silver FX pro and use the high contrast setting. Those spots will appear clearly. Just look at top left corner for the worst.

Hi Skippy,

I would certainly go after Canon for releasing a defective product.

E-mail CPS this thread and show them we're all having issues. It's absurd that they have not acknowledged a problem.

Ok so i just tested my new camera. Just fired a few shots. Ok it has dust on it already nothing to worry about. But the brush streak lines on this sensor are worse than my previous camera:

As you can see, nothing like the 1Dx Mark II

We now have ANOTHER two cameras to add to the list -- your brand new replacement, and Skippy's.

Canon knew about the sensor line issue a year ago. I made a huge stink about it when I first noticed it on my original 1DX2. This is absolutely unacceptable.

They just said they’d look further into it. That was the last I heard of the issue. They checked my original 1DX2 sensor replacement to make sure it didn’t have the issue, and then once that camera was replaced they were supposed to have checked that the replacement camera didn’t have the issue; the replacement camera has one little diagonal line, which I’m just ignoring.

My guess is that the claims from Canon of users damaging the sensor themselves and charging them for a replacement, might actually be them noticing the brush stroke patterns, don't you think?

Nothing would surprise me. Like I said earlier in the thread, leaked documents from a few years back showed that Canon knew of defects in the original 1DX and the 24-70mm f/2.8L II and still chose to charge customers for repairs unless they noticed the defect.

EDIT: here's a link to the 1DX defect: https://fstoppers.com/gear/confirmed-canon-eos-1dx-c-cold-weather-af-issue-9573

I e-mailed Arthur Morris yesterday. He said I could post his response:

Artie:
I am at the last stop with Canon. If they refuse to replace it — they already replaced the sensor “free of charge” — I will either need to take them to small claims court or try to get B&H to replace it (and hopefully bust their balls).

Read everything below and take note of oil spot #3 below, after only 119 image on the new sensor.

with love, artie

ps: feel free to quote me.

pps: be prepared for more of the same.

Arthur also sent me an exchange he's has had with a Canon 'Executive Response' representative, where the rep. indicated that she was in the process of reviewing the situation with management:

Good afternoon Mr. Morris,

I wanted to let you know that I did your pictures and am currently in the process of reviewing the situation with management. I’ll be following up with you shortly once that review’s finished.

I'm in the process of collecting all the RAW files from the different people who have been kind enough to submit them to this thread. Tomorrow I'll be contacting CPS and see if I can send them all over. I also have the good mind to send this thread and the pictures to Artie's 'executive response' rep. too.

I can't upload a photo directly but here is link to my latest sensor test. This is a "new" sensor. The sensor was replaced last month (Sep 15th). So I've been shooting for a month. The dark dot on the right is real dust/dirt. Everything on the left is oil splatter. I've contacted CPS and am sending camera in again to complain about this and have it cleaned. I am out of warranty so the sensor replacement was done as a "courtesy". So the replacement isn't even under their normal 6 month part warranty. I'm going to wait until Monday to send it in so I can at least use it this weekend.

This afternoon I received back 2 of the 4 1Dx2 from clean and check. Have not looked at them yet. Those were the pre-ordered units.

The September 2016 bodies are still at CPS. One I noticed before sending it in with a bright flashlight a vertical double line like it was not finished cleaning with the last clean and check. Email shows:
Customer reports heavy sensor dust and spots/splatter as well as a vertical line on the sensor - This does require replacement of the CMOS Sensor Ass'y.
Customer requests to check if mirror box is worn due to frequent long duration captures at 14 fps. Clean, check all functions and repair to good working
order. No response necessary.

So they must have seen that dirt line was something more.

The other body was being investigated for a Caution01 messages in the status log that I mentioned and await the testing results.

Good to read that something is happening there as well. I have returned my brand new camera yesterday and am waiting again, for another unit. Mind you, if i get that unit in my hand, it would be the 8th 1Dx mark II in my hands since i had my first problem with this camera (including loaners). All of the camera's suffered from the dust issue. We call it dust, but i believe it is something else. And some, more than others also had a severe oil problem. Ever since i came aware of the brush stroke pattern phenomenon (and sometimes diagonal single line) i have investigated them over a number of copies (Also from fellow photographers). It seems that almost all 1Dx mark II sensors are affected by this 'defect' (at least the ones i tested) although some sensors show so little that those could be called within tolerance.

Now if Canon is reading, good! But let me be clear. Images posted here on this 13 page thread are NOT within tolerance levels and you should finally start to investigate this yourself and take this matter seriously. There are more people complaining about this issue on other platforms as well and most likely more will follow. Canon needs to stop telling customers that they damaged their own sensor and acknowledge there is a defect in their sensors and assure them that they will be looked after. Start with having a better QC on new units leaving the plants so we can expect new batches of units that are free of these lines to start with. And come with an official working and approved cleaning instruction for your customers so they are confident to clean their own sensor.

I will report my findings on body #8 as soon as i get it.

Okay, I've compiled images from 14 different cameras from this thread alone. I've also got cropped jpegs from Arthur Morris, my own sensor photos, as well as another user's RAW shots from Canon Rumors. That's a total of 18 cameras.

All of them exhibit the dust/oil problems and/or the sensor line issue.

I haven't sent or composed any e-mails to Canon as of yet. If anyone here has anymore RAW files they can contribute I'd appreciate it.

If possible, please include RAW files with exif data included so Canon is aware these are all different cameras.

So even replacement sensors and bodies exhibit similar behaviour. Thank you Canon for really taking this seriously and compensate affected units. I hope.
So it would seem that the 1Dx mark II is capable of performing fantastically, but the application is limited to low DoF subjects like sports, birds and events. Any other types of photography that involve stopping down your glass are not ideal, as well as shooting large unicolor areas like sky and studio backgrounds.

Those who fancy a 1Dx mark II be warned. I for one have decided to stay put and see what happens.

8 bodies and still trying to find one acceptable for your use? Wow, that is patience. Far more then I would have. I could tolerate one or maybe two swaps but after that I would move on to another product. I didn't even bother with the 1D3 as I didn't want the hassle. If the 1D4 wasn't better I was prepared to go Nikon.

8 is including loaners. I have had 3 and tonight i will be receiving my 4th copy, but still that is too much yes. Also all the testing i have done for Canon to show that also their loaner bodies suffer from this. My rep is happy with all evidence, but no one is paying me for it. Then why do it? Just to prove that there is a bigger problem than just a few bodies and hopefully they will come with a solution.

I have been thinking about switching though, but after i aquired the 600 F4 II a few months ago i realised that i am too invested in canon to switch and take a huge financial hit when doing so.

I think your only hope at this point is that Canon tries to match the D850/A7RIII/A99ii type of body or maybe a 7D3 if they finally get the AF right. Glad I don't do high DOF shooting.

Chimping,

Here are links to my raw files. Frames from 8/28 were done after I realized there was an issue and then sent to CPS the first time. Photos from 8/31 were test shots after cleaning by CPS. I still saw spots and now a streak on left side. CPS then replaced the sensor. 10/24 are latest test shots after a month of use of the new sensor. I'll be sending camera in again to CPS on Monday.
