...and a photo through the beast.

The beast is a Pentax-A* 300mm f2.8 ED IF that just arrived today. There are a few marks on the body and some paint loss on the lens mount, but what bothers me are a couple of minute, and I mean very small, scuffs on the front element. These were not disclosed, so am negotiating with seller to prevent a return. I was quite impressed with image quality during a walkabout test run this afternoon. The lens is 3kg and unwieldy, but can be handheld. Manual focus is easily done with one finger. It is a fun lens to use, and hopefully I can get some recompense for the undisclosed blemish.
This photo was taken yesterday as part of the Daily-In Challenge at Pentax Forums. It was a rough low energy day and a dearth of subjects as we travelled along our well-beaten path.

I finally set up a set of shelves and unpacked my boxes after two years. This microscope was packed in a huge box with reams of packing paper. We had some good times together. Who knows if we ever will again.

Well, I discovered a problem other than dust in my M400 lens. It seems the aperture arm is not aligned correctly. It stops down and is snappy when not mounted on a camera. When on the camera, the aperture will stop down if turned from f5.6 to f8 without DOF preview being engaged. It should stay wide open. If the lens is mounted while the aperture is set to f5.6, then the lens will not stop down beyond f8 at all. If the lens is mounted while the aperture is set to f45, then it appears to work OK. It does the same thing on both cameras, so it's definitely a lens problem. So, off to the lens doctor if I can find one in Germany.

...and finished my monthly roll for the Single-In Challenge a little early. I actually didn't take a photo today, as the roll was already spent. Now to muster up the remaining supplies and energy to develop and scan.

A follow-up on the M 400mm lens. I removed the lens mount, messed around with the aperture lever, then reseated the lens mount and reattached it. This made an improvement. When set to f5.6 (wide open) the lens behaves normally. When set to any other aperture, the lens will stop down either a fraction of a stop to maybe 1/3 stop. Again, normal behavior is to stay wide open. The lens seems to stop down normally with depth of field preview and during exposure. I think I'm still going to try and find someone to look at it, but it's probably fine as it is now.
Working on an idea for the Project 52 challenge, I whipped out the big macro lens. I had to clean the table three times, and I still had more than a dozen dust particles to clone out.
