I really never though this would go as far as it has. we all have to come to grips that we are all the most pompous self serving fools around. we like to feel we have the moral high ground when in reality we are just people. we the people who can't really get out of our own way and realize what we really do. if we all really looked really within and saw reality we'd pretty much keep our mouths shut. I know where I stand and its not perfectly level here. I take my attitude adjustments and learn from them. well at least most of the time....Show more →
It's just some of us or much more level than others...and B&H just got their attitude adjusted and hopefully they level out just a little bit from this.

everyone's time comes. including the self righteous.

It is not by accident that every salesperson I have ever dealt with at B&H is Jewish. With Hispanic workers there is a sense that they can be screwed and will not complain as a white or black worker may and some of this due to a greater likelihood that they are not US citizens.
Tyson's preys on Mexican workers who when injured on the job at one of their meat processing plants can be let go and sent packing back to Mexico and no worker's comp claims or other problems as with the locals who don't want this hazardous and low paying jobs.
When unions are attacked as they have been by Congress and state legislatures over the past 65 years, the maltreatment of all workers increases and average pay stagnates with current average income in real dollars still sitting at 1970 levels.
The NRA (national restaurant association) has been successful in lobbying legislatures to keep the minimum wage for restaurant workers at $2.13 an hour. No one can live on this wage even if they work two jobs 7 days a week. The result is that communities which provide food stamps and housing assistance are subsidizing the food chains as with the $400,000 a year cost of a Wal-Mart store to the local community with its poorly paid workers who are instructed by Wal-Mart managers on how to apply for assistance programs. This is why I never shop at Wal-Mart or at any chain food store/restaurant.

If true it is certainly by coincidence since the store has 100 or more sales associates, some of whom are Jewish and some of whom are not. It is a very diverse group nowadays.

Are you generalizing a comment to encompass all Hispanic workers in the USA? Doesn't this reduce them all to one broadly painted stereotype?

I'm an immigrant and many of my friends are too. Minimum wage jobs is just a stop gap. It's a starting point. From there, work hard to become more valuable. My parents had to learn English and such to advance. This country is a great country from my standpoint. Anyone has the opportunity to advance. My family members ran a couple of restaurants and I can tell you that turning a profit to pay everyone is not as easy as you think. They have risk (when the economy tank). My wife and I have a business too and for some reason, many people think we're uber rich. Those who actually run a business would know better.
Many of us like to pay as little as possible on goods and services while telling everyone else to pay their worker as high as possible beyond the minimum. Easier said than done. There are more to a story than meets the eye or the press.
What I found in this country is that if you don't like to work where you are at, you are free to move. Of course, if I'm forced to work against my will, then something got to be done. This is not the case.

Many states that have a $2.13 minimum wage for tipped workers include a requirement that the total plus tips meet a minimum, usually $8-10 per hour.

The reality is that the employer pays the worker $2.13 and there is no accounting for the tips and it is legal in most states for an employer to pool all the tips and distribute them to all the workers. At that point the tips for the server person is effectively cut in half.
Where I live no one can live on $8 an hour. A studio apartment rents for $1400 a month and so a food service worker either lives with their parents or 3 to a bedroom.
Dan Brown - could you live on $8 and hour or your children? Even union tradespeople making $25 an hour in my region have a tough time making ends meet and heaven help them if they or any of their family members need medical care.
I have traveled in third world countries and year by year the USA is coming to resemble places like Honduras and a very distant reality from Canada or countries in Europe and Scandinavia. There is a meanness when there is no sense of a problem in paying wages too low for people to be able to eat. When a McDonalds or Applebee's worker has to dumpster dive there is a problem for society as a whole.
When I travel overseas i am ashamed to be from the USA and having Trump as the commander in chief has only made it much worse.

People flock here because there are opportunities here that are better than they have in their previous country. If it is not, there is no reasons to move here.
There are many ways to improve this if it is that easy. One, you can start a business and pay your workers as much as you want. Two is to move to the other country to get the real picture. European countries are struggling to create jobs. They don't have as many of the luxuries that we have. We are a nation of spoiled brats who, again, want more for less. For the most part, we are getting that, which makes us darn spoiled.
Again, the $8 or so is a stop gap. Maybe we should have a sign for any immigrants coming to the US that says, "$8 - stop gap".

And yes, when we came over here, there were more than a dozen of us living in a 3 bedroom house and some of my other friends considered that luxury. We did not complain! In fact, I think this what makes us more family even though people living with us weren't immediate family member.
I think this thread is getting off topic. Sorry for that.

No apologies necessary, tuantran. You have paid your dues.. by golly. It's called "guts" "courage" and "competence" here. Those attributes of you and your friends/family stand in such sharp contrast to the "bleaters and moaners" who decry our Country. We are blessed to have you all here.
That said: It always amazes me how those folks who bleat and moan just don't get up off their rich, dead asses and do two things: a) either contribute from their largesse to those who are in dire straits, or b) get the hell out and take up residence in the European nirvana.

This coming from a guy who calls his city, "Filthadelphia". How do you know said individuals are not contributing to the needy? Look, you can love your country and still disagree with the way certain classes and races are treated. It is not always possible for someone to "pull up their bootstraps" and make a better life for themselves or their families. Until you've walked in those shoes, it's best to just keep your opinions to yourself and help your fellow man whenever and however you can. You never know if there may come a day when you'll need that helping hand.

Well, Sarsfield, how the hell do you know whether or not I walked in their shoes? How do you know whether or not I've lifted myself up by my bootstraps or not? Ans: You don't! So kindly follow your own advice and "just keep your opinions to yourself" so far as they relate to me.

I think we all agree that we can do a better job in helping this country or better yet, world to be a better place for everyone. The problem I have is that some people attack this country by not standing for the anthem, etc. My dad wasn't perfect. My mom wasn't perfect but I don't think I would tell them that they suck for leaving our previous country where we had a much bigger house and we were living in style. Only problem was that it was a communist country.
What is amazing is that with all these disagreements and such, I bet anyone here can sit down and talk about photography for hours until someone passes out. I won't since I only drink diet soda. Yes, endless choices of diet soda.

Well maybe you should just keep your own opinions to yourselves regarding other people that might not see the world exactly like you. How the hell do you know exactly what those rich people do to help others...you DON'T...so maybe take a bit of your own advice and keep your views to yourself.
Everyone helps others in many ways...some of which you may never know. Sometimes it's the little things that count...one's that others just don't need to know about.
