Here is a shot from yesterday. Single shot, f/8, A7riii, ISO 50 and 150mm I am pretty sure.
The skies looked mean, my friends last night

This is from Notch Peak, which boasts the second highest continuous vertical rock face in the nation behind Yosemite’s El Capitan (at about 3,000 feet. Not many photographers know about it It is dazzling out here though!

Not very happy reading this test. If I'd known 100-300 was that good I think I might have tried to buy one. Now prices are probably too high. Although quite happy with the 60-300 Tamron.

Here's an MTF for it. I don't really care about MTF testing as much as I used to. If the link doesn't work it's the wayback machine for photodo.com, from 2001 I think :

I had CZ Contax 80-200 a few years back to use adapted to Canon bodies. It was a so-so lens -- not awful, not great. Also, I was not happy with the many Alt lenses I had with no exif -- it became very hard to categorize in PP trying to remember what was shot with which focal length and at which apertures. So, I got rid of the 80-200 along with the Contax Zeiss 135/2.8, another fairly mediocre lens.

I'm not a big telephoto shooter, so I continued to shoot the Canon 100-400 v.I with good results, after the Sigma MC-11 adapter came out, I used it on the Sony bodies. But that is a big heavy lens, used for tripod work for the most part.

Since then, I acquired the Canon 70-200/4L (no IS), and am happiest with this lens for the times I need a tele-zoom. Has AF, which I prefer in tele-zoom, exif, IBIS on the a7R2, relative small size and light weight, and is very sharp. (I got a great deal here on B&S, thanks again, Mathieu!.)

I'm not a fan of the size, cost, and uncertainty of internal delamination/haze issues with the Contax 100-300, although the ones without the issues produce outstanding results! Fred, Mike, and Ronny (among others) have shown how great the Zeiss 100-300 can be.

I'm also not in the habit of lugging push/pull super-teles around -- they are awkward on jaunts through the brush, with two cameras/lenses dangling off neck and shoulder. I keep trying to talk myself into pulling the two-ring 70-200 Canon zoom out of the bag for rhododendrons, but haven't yet this season.

I certainly can't fault anyone for trying to find the Zeiss Holy Grail for $200. I tried, but I learned.

Lastly, Dustin's photos are great sales tools for the gear he uses, but I'm convinced he could shoot great landscapes with Coke bottles affixed to any camera body! Great work, Dustin, and always a pleasure to visually follow your quest.

Amazing pics everyone, as always!
No, a USD 200 C/Y 100-300 of course doesn't exist, but an USD 250-300 one with separation + USD 200-250 repair definitely yes, mine has definitely reborn to new life after it and it looks as sharp as before to my eyes.

The Canon 70-200 F4 L remains a very sound alternative at a similar overall price (including the adapter), as even the still amazingly good C/Y contemporary Canon 80-200 F2.8L, the glorious "Magic Drainpipe" (quite heavy though).

Has anyone tried the Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 L with a Sigma MC-11? I've been reading a lot of positive reviews of that lens (on a Canon body, not on a Sony A7/A7R iii).

I used it for a few weeks on my A7R II with a MB IV adapter (I think that was in the pre-MC-11 days) and found the AF to be very hit-and-miss with the A7R II. I think it would perform a lot better on the current Sony bodies, but the Sony FE 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G OSS is equally good (both were noticeably better than the Sony FE 70-200mm f4 G OSS).

Did not try it directly, but my experience so far is that for landscaping/portraiture you should be good with the AF (only variable could be if eye AF works properly or not), while for sports/action you are much better rely at least on Sigma SGV lenses (and even then a native solution would be much much better).

I tried a friend's 70-300L once for a few quick shots. I was very impressed with the images. IQ of the 70-300L is step above the 70-200/4, but it is a bit bulkier and heavier. I would take it over the 70-200/4L if they were near the same price.

Worked great on my a7R2 -- perhaps Molson had earlier MC-11 firmware when using on a7R or a7R2, but focusing was not a issue for me at around f/5.6.

Great news. I'm going to rent a Canon 70-300mm L as soon as I get a break from my intense work schedule to try out and I'll report back. I rented the Sony 70-200mm f4 and was sorely disappointed with it for infinity focus landscapes, so much so that I asked lensrentals to confirm it was within specs when I returned it (which it was). Now I'm going to rent the Canon 70-300mm L and 70-200mm f4L IS II lenses. I much prefer the shorter length of the 70-300mm to the 70-200mm and would prefer the longer reach. I also much prefer a zoom starting at 70mm vs. 100mm, that preference, the length/size and the weight are the reasons I'm not rushing to the Sony 100-400mm, although depending on how these rentals work out, I may end up there.

That's a good plan!

My only caveat on my earlier remarks is that I used it for general subject shooting, not sports or rapid focus. But you should do decently on image quality and sharp focus, I just can't vouch for focus speed with fast moving subjects.

Thanks, Gunzorro. I'd am interested in the Canon 70-300mm L on an A7Riii primarily for landscapes, mostly stopped down to f8 and often at infinity focus. I would not expect it to focus quickly or to be good for fast moving subjects.

@httivals I have owned the 70-300L after reading Ming Thein's statement that the CY 100-300 is very similar IQ wise but he chose the CY 100-300 over the 70-300L for it's rendering.

I sold my first CY 100-300 and picked up the 70-300L as my landscape/tele option on my a7r2. It's a very capable lens, and honestly quite a bit more pleasant to use than the CY 100-300. Better MFD, whether sealing, separate zoom and focus rings, that 70-100mm, easier to MF, it has AF, and IBIS calibrates on it's own. It's slow but accurate for AF. Sharpness is very comparable, across the frame, while I think fringing control might be a bit better in the 70-300L. Prices are close. Having said all that, I ended up selling mine after while and picking up another CY 100-300 because the images have so much more life beyond being the optical competence.
