Received notice today that the lens arrived, was inspected and that it's rear element separation.

Repair should be done next week and should get a report on the status. If so, that's faster than I'd thought.

Keeping the fingers crossed that it's fully repairable.

This sounds about as efficient and fast a turn around as I experienced NKIR's thin sensor mod for my A7rII. That's super encouraging.

Faster and more communicative compared to CLA services I've used.

I've got a Leica 90mm F2.8 with some small areas of rear element fungus. It's not a very special lens, but I do like it. Might inquire about cleaning that one up too.
Though I wonder if it wouldn't be less costly to have it done domestically, assuming it's possible in either case.

Received notice today that the lens separation repair was complete.
Should be on the way back within a day.

That’s very fast turnaround.
So, ~75 shipping to + 150 repair + 40 return shipping = $265 plus the initial lens cost.

If it's just the rear most element I'd assume it'd be possible the cut down on shipping costs significantly by removing and shipping only the rear element group.

My new good copy had a big chunk of debris on the lens group right after the rear-most group. It took only a few seconds and a spanner (use the two holes outside the rear lens to unscrew) to get the rear elements out and the debris cleaned. They come out with the holder, so reassembly is just screwing the holder and elements back in.

I am not encouraging anyone to tear their lens apart if they aren't comfortable, capable, and willing to do so at their own risk

Good advice though. It's very easy to remove the rear element which is the culprit for the haze. Just ship the rear group for repair.

This is from Amazon US, and it's a set of four, but the longest one should fit. My 100-300 is under 9" with either the Fotodiox or Leitax adapter.

Another possibly inferior option are portable speaker EVA hard-cases. The big drawback is that you can't just open the "top", it opens along the side -- works for me but something to note. And you can get these on ebay shipped from China for $3-$6 if you can wait.

I've used this case ("JBL charge case" <- ebay) with my Tamron 70-210 f/4 + MB-IV Adapter:

https://www.amazon.com/LTGEM-Waterproof-Portable-Wireless-Bluetooth/dp/B01M9DK8BM

You have to cut out the compartment divider on one side for the charger and cable with a box cutter, my 70-210 + adapter just fits nice and snug. There's also a bigger case for a different JBL speaker that I've used with the Tamron 100-400.

I'm about to pull a trigger on a C100-300. Other than rare haze? Anything else I should look out for? I guess it's a leap of faith probably best wait for a FM member put on up.

FYI I’ve got two up now. One has no haze and one was professionally repaired - so
neither have haze.

I think that’s the only major/functional issue anyone has had with them.

There is also the zoom creep which some copies have way more than others.

Yeah, one of mine has a slow creep when vertical (nose-down) and the other doesn't have any.

Is there something like a gasket that wears and allows some to creep, while others don't?

The lens not only shines when shooting landscapes, it's also exceptional in close focus region.
I shot these last week at around 100-150 mm FL wide open in a market in Palma de Mallorca, subjects close to mfd.

Has any compared FE G 70-300 to the C100-300? It seems like less hassle to deal with with the G lens.

Most of my shooting is done without a tripod. For me, the issue with the Contax 100-300, apart from the issue of not getting haze or separation, is that the lens does not communicate with the camera, thus requiring inputting the focal length in order for IBIS to operate properly. And of course the focal length is variable. So getting IBIS is not really practicable, and without a tripod, the lack of IBIS diminishes the finished optical quality of the shot.
