Once weather gets a bit better, I will test the Canon outdoors. For now it looks like one fine lens for $500. Now this has me interested in the Canon 135mm f2. And why I sold my 85L II.

Bobby it looks like the GF 100-200 is better on the edges than the Canon, but similar performance in the center. You might want to check for field curvature on the Canon which might be hurting its performance. You are comparing a zoom (and not Fuji's best zoom) against a prime here, so I would have hoped the Canon would do better. The difference in image circle is of course a big difference so even though the Canon has the advantage of being a high quality prime vs. a zoom I suppose the difference isn't surprising.

Also keep in mind your crops are not outside the FF 35mm image circle, so aren't really challenging the Canon. They are really just in the outer midzone of this frame. Crop from much farther in to the corners would be more instructive.

bobby, the Canon 200mm looks to have a slight resolution edge on the center enlargements, viewing with my 27" 5K monitor, I'm surprised given the Canon is so ancient. I assume Kasson-like best practices on the test. Yes, the Canon 135/2 would be interesting. You could put it head on head with your 110 also ;-)

Yes good points but 200mm f2.8 cost me $400. 100-200G used cost me $1550. And zoom can't do f2.8. I need to test more outside. I may still sell the zoom and get 250mm f4 as I need more reach. I need to do shot like this but I need 300mm for it. I wish I still had my 300mm f2.8 IS.

The Steelsring smart adapter for Nikon glass arrived early, but I haven’t had a chance to really test it. I did put the 105/1.4 and 58/1.4 on to get a feel for it. The 105 seems snappy to aquire focus but the 58 racks back and forth and seem to have a harder time to lock on. When it does, it seem to be acurate though. I will test it more tomorrow in daylight, but the speed of the 58 is really disapointing.

Maybe should have waited for this:

Edited:- Sorry I see you are talking Nikon version. Never understood why all these makers don't make Nikon versions at the same time, could it be due to smaller user base or something else?

Bobby, I recently bought the EF 300mm F4 IS and have found it to be sharp edge to edge even wide open. AF is quick and accurate with the Fringer adapter.

Bobby you should look into the Canon nFD 300 f/2.8L. It is a fantastic lens and covers the whole GFX sensor quite well and you will like the cost -- I got one for $750--and if you like a 4 X 3 aspect ratio or squarer it is a 220 f/2 equivalent.

FD would require another adapter I assume or same one as any Canon EF adapter? Some one else on dpr mentioned that 300mm f4 IS also works fine on GFX100s.

Yes, it would require another adapter, but you can buy a cheap dumb adapter for Canon nFD (the nFD lenses all have aperture rings and no electronics). It might be a good idea to keep it on the lens and with the cost of the lens springing for a dumb adapter should be easy.

I had the 300 f/4 IS, but it is probably Canon's worst telephoto lens. I believe it was either their first or second IS lens and the IS is pretty poor and in this early manifestation clearly undermines the IQ. I would definitely stay away from that lens.

p.56 #12 · Adapting Lenses to the Fuji GFX

Last Tuesday, I casually mentioned to a friend that I was curious about how well the Metabones 1.26X Expander might work for my purposes when used with some of the vintage Nikon lenses I have and use occasionally with my A7R / FrankenKamera VII outfit.

To my surprise, the next day he forwarded an email from Lens Rentals informing me I had been gifted with a one-week rental of said lens adapter and it was scheduled to arrive yesterday. Wow ... thanks, Jeffrey!

I took a few test photos with it yesterday afternoon to confirm it actually functioned -- it did and a lot better than I expected, too! -- so when Miss Abby and I left the house at 4:40 am this morning for a photo outing (me) / walk (her) it was mounted on my GFX 100S along with a Nikon 24-50/f3.3-4.5 zoom I bought last summer for (iirc) just $65.

As it turned out, it works quite well indeed, as I believe the following sample photo shows:

Although the corners are a bit soft / smeared (which obviously isn't a huge issue for this type of photography) and it's far from the ne plus ultra in terms of sharpness and contrast, its rendering style is not without some appeal. When the modest price I paid for it is factored into the equation, it's hard to deny its bang-for-the-buck credentials.

Mind you, I doubt there are very many photographers who will spend $519 for an adapter so they can use a $65 lens on their $6,000 camera body, but for those who do fall into this category, based on the results from this morning's outing, I can confidently say they could do quite a bit worse while spending a lot more money in the process... <shrug>

EDIT: Here's a second photo from this morning's outing, taken a bit later (hence the lighter sky) and also with the Metabones 1.26X Expander / Nikon 24-50/f4 combo at f10 :

More updates on the Steelsring F/GFX adapter for Nikon glass. Yesterday I managed to get some weirdness out of the 58/1.4 and this adapter. It almost looks like I was trying to using a flash above it's sync speed. After turning EF+E off and just using MS it went away. Today I tried the 50/1.8G which worked fine in both settings, so I remounted the 58 and could. not replicate the problem. Not sure what the cause is. AF is much snappier in good light, which makes sense I guess. Still I bit surprised at how much difference it made. The 58 is not known for its fast AF and it was quite a while since I used it on a modern Nikon camera so It might just be that my memory fails me. Anyways, linked image with the weird darkened top portion. This was the worst example, so not all images came out as bad (but definitely noticeable).

p.56 #14 · Adapting Lenses to the Fuji GFX

I've posted a few notes here about my not-very-succesful attempts at adapting and using older MF lenses on my '100S.. Here's an update that may be worth someone's reading.

I still have and love the Fuji GFX 100S and the Fuji 32-64.. I also still have the Fuji 80/1.7, which is QUITE nice, and the Fuji 100-200.. The 45-100 proved to be quite good and versatile, but it's a little heavy and bulky for this soon-78-year-old chubby oldfart.. Have been thru a few adapted lenses; the Pentax 645 300/4 and some Contax/Zeiss 645 lenses did NOT work well, and my friend (who has also bought a Fuji '100S) now has most of them.

But I still have a yet-to-be-scratched itch for some adapted lens(es), and somewhat fascinated by the Fuji/Hasselblad H-series lenses* and happy that Fuji offers a H-to-G adapter, I was a bit surprised that about-all the Fuji-and-H'b-designed and -manufactured HC-mount lenses ever made are still available new-and-expensive and also used-and-inexpensive.. I've found and ordered a used H'b HC 80/2.8 (c. 500 grams) and a new Fuji adapter. (Lucky me--the very lens length I'm thinking of replacing with an HC is the least-expensive and most-common one, the 80.) The combined weight of the lens AND adapter is less than that of the Fuji 80/1.7, so I think it'll work for me.. One negative (for me) with these adapted autofocus lenses is that they're manual focus on this adapter.

Then I thought about that heavy Fuji 100-200 and found and ordered a used, slighly lighter HC 150/3.2 to replace that...and then found and ordered an HC $1500-RR 1.7x teleconverter for less than half that price.. So the plan is to have the F.32-64, HC80/2.8 and 150/3.2, and the HC 1.7X TC.. Even with the 207-gram adapter, the new rig will be about 1-1/2 pounds lighter than the one with all-Fuji lenses, and that's increasingly important as I get older.

Silly me--for a few hours Saturday, I was HIGHLY infatuated with the newish Hasselblad H6D-100c camera system (why, I know not...just emotional, I guess).. That lasted until I found that the camera has no IBIS, and that's important for this shaky oldfart.. Lucky me--saved about 40 kilobuck$ this weekend!

My goal with all lenses and cameras is to enjoy getting out and creating gorgeous images, but trying to get adapted lenses working properly and easily is not much fun for me. We'll see how this goes. 🤔😃

* Until a few weeks ago, the only thing I knew about Hasselblad stuff is that it's expensive

I have used many of the Hasselblad HC lenses and I would encourage you to consider to other HC lenses. First, I am not very impressed by the 80 f/2.8. Pretty uneven performance across the frame and not a very wide aperture. I think the Mamiya 645 f/2.8 is at least as good and a lot cheaper. I think the Contax 645 80 f/2 , which I had is way better stopped down to f/2.8. The gem in the HC lineup, IMO however, is the 100 f/2.2. It has among the best bokeh I have seen on any lens. Sure it has a bit of axial CA, but I love that lens and it isn't all that heave either. If you got the HC 100, the 150 is awfully close (although it too is a good lens), but you might consider the 210 f/4 that I think is a lovely lens. So personally, I would have a pretty strong preference for the 100/210 pair over the 80/150 pair, but the 80/150 is lighter. I think you will be disappointed with the 80's performance, however.

PS - if you edit your post by deleting the bracket b bracket before the text of your post starts (i.e., before the first word I've) you will remove the bolding of the text, which is a little annoying.

Contrary to Steve, I love the HC 80 on our GFX and disliked the 100 due to it's lack of sharpness WO and the CA vs the 80. The 100 just wasn't suited for what I shoot.

We also use an H5D, so on the GFX we use the HC 28, 50II, 80 & 210 and have owned the 150N and 120II with the GFX. The HC 28 and 50 MkII are stunning. The 210 fantastic (disclaimer: have one for sale) and the 120II very, very nice - but a bit long and awkward with the adapter (it's focus ring is at the front of the lens). The 150N is nice, but to me, not up to either the 120II or 210.

Enjoy

The 100 near wide open is very much a portrait lens and has a rendering a lot like the Leica R 80 f/1.4. I like that rendering a lot, but not everyone does, so I am not surprised that Conner999 does not.. It has quite a bit of spherical aberrations that resolve quickly as you stop down. As you stop down to f/5.6, however the lens is sharp across the field and very suitable for landscapes. I am posting one of my favorites below with it.

Guardian of the Ancient Writings

Another one from our recent trip out to Utah. We were hiking Fire Valley State Park in Nevada and the trail we were on had Petroglyphs on the Canyon walls. These Petroglyphs are estimated to be from 2000 to 4000 years old. Little Michael was obsessed with finding them and he was quick to spot them. Our conversation turned to the the spiritual meanings of some of the Petroglyphs. High up on the rocks hidden from view, Michael spotted some Petroglyphs and a set of eyes staring back at him. I managed to get a photo by climbing up some rocks. At the end we thought it was a pretty cool turn of events. We named the photo the Guardian of the Ancient Writings. In some Native American cultures the Great Horned Owl is believed to be the restless spirits of the dead. They also believe that owls are a carrier of ancient knowledge and a bringer of deep, mystical wisdom.

A tip if looking for a 100:
-------------------------------
You can sometimes get great deals by picking up an HC 100 that has non-op AF.

The lens is infamous for a small white plastic drive gear in its AF system that cracks and eventually breaks - making AF inaccurate and eventually DOA.

It can be repaired with the right tools if you know what you're doing, but some people just sell the lens when it happens and since AF is irrelevant on the GFX, it can lead to $$$ savings.
