p.13 #1 · Adapting Lenses to the Fuji GFX

Mamiya 645 80mm f/2.8 N, wide open at f/2.8, full frame followed by a small centre crop. Exporting these in sRGB and compressed for the web really doesn't do them justice.

Still, I'm amazed by the crops!

Here's the Mamiya 645 A 150mm f/2.8 N, also wide open at f/2.8, along with a centre crop:

I was wondering if anyone has tested the Canon EF 200mm f2.8L or the EF 180mm f3.5L lenses on the GFX? I have the Techart EF-GFX adapter on the way, and I'd like to find a short tele that would cover the full frame on the GFX.

Judging from the haloes and the slightly odd effect on noise (see the leaf textures), you may have "over-sharpened" just a bit, no? (Perhaps a smaller radius and a bit lower amount and/or details setting?

Here's the Mamiya-Sekor C 645 105-210mm f/4.5 ULD zoom lens at 210mm and f/4.5. Not quite as sharp as the primes - very slightly soft wide open if you view it at 100%, but still pretty good.

My $79 Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM seems to do pretty well on the GFX, too. There is some vignetting, although it's not noticeable in scenes like this.

Here are a few from today as we were decorating our Christmas tree. The first is with the Leica R 50 f/1.4 E55. The last four are with the Leica R 80 f/1.4. The last shot was at ISO 12800 shot with just the Christmas tree lights.

p.13 #14 · Adapting Lenses to the Fuji GFX

Does anyone have any opinions about the use of the adapters? I know this is a lens thread, but since the lenses discussed here need help to work on the GFX, please tell me your opinions. I’m especially interested in the Cambo EOS>GFX ($1200) the Kipon EOS>GFX ($300) the Techart/Leicaist/Steelsring/Shoten EOSAF>GFX ($520) the Kipon Hassy V to GFX shift adapters ($350), the Laowa Magic Format Converter GFX ($390) and of course any adapters with flaws or issues due to poor craftsmanship or cheap materials.

This was a long and very informative thread to read, thanks to all for the effort. I am probably about to transition to GFX for my architectural photography business. I’ll be moving from a 5x7 film setup and a Nikon D810 with non-shifting lenses corrected in Lightroom. This has proven very satisfactory for my clients but am now required to have a 40MP+ capture and want to move my work-flow from post-production perspective correction to optical perspective correction (Shifts, mostly rise and fall, rarely stitching).

I have never warmed to Sony. I have never warmed to using a MF back. I have never warmed to laptop-tethering (except Nikon>CamRanger>iPad over WiFi) but I have had three Fuji-X cameras and like the design, quality and menus. Thus my decision to go wth MiniMediumFormat in the form of the DSLR-like GFX.

It looks like I will be accomplishing my shift to MF with Canon Shift lenses and digital Rodenstock/Schneider lenses in focusing helicoils mounted in shift adapters. Besides the Canon 17mm TS-E and the 24 TS-E II I will need to find a 28mm to 35mm prime that can shift (may be a 35mm Digitar XL) and then I may use my 40mm FLE and 60mm Hasselblads on shift adapters. (Note:Shift is more critical than tilt for me.)

Next week I will be renting 32-64mm and 23mm Fuji GFX Lenses and a 17mm TS-E and a 1.4X Canon Teleconverter from BorrowLenses and LensRentals (They didn’t individually have all the pieces). I will be borrowing a friend's GFX and Canon 24mm II TS-E and 5DSR. I have purchased the Kipon GFX to Canon EOS adapter to change aperture and a EOS to Nikon G adapter to try Nikon glass as well. (One or both will go back if unsatisfactory) I have a 1970’s hotel in town that will make a great subject for shift testing. I’ll be looking for uncorrectable things like distortion, smearing and softness. If CA is correctable in post I’m OK with it. If vignetting or lens cast is correctable in post I’m OK with it since all my delivered files get extensive post processing. I’ll report back with my findings. I have an old Nikon 85mm 1.4 and a 16-35mm zoom I’m curious about too.

I would like metadata from the lenses but upon receiving my KIPON, I am not initially impressed with build quality of the GFX>EOS electronic adapter. (but at this price I could get a spare) The Techart looks more durable and not having to recharge another unit would be a plus.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I have Novoflex adapters for most of the lenses I adapt and they seem well made and work well, but for what you are considering I would think long and hard about the Cambo Actus for GFX. It isn't cheap, but would work well for what you plan and would provide the movement you want with lots of lenses. I have one and use it with Hasselblad V mount lenses and Mamiya RZ 6 x 7 lenses. Those both provide lots of movement as they have a much larger image circle than is needed for the GFX. You will still probably want the Canon 24 TS and maybe the Canon 17 TS as well, but longer focal lengths the larger format lenses work well

Thanks Steve,
The Novoflex always seem to be the best rated adapters.

If I needed any other movement other than rise and fall the Actus would be a no-brainer, but as soon as the GFX becomes that connected to a view camera, all the size and weight advantages become minimized and the tech-cameras with MF backs are probably better choices. I could just stick with my 4x5 camera. Of course I want it both ways... Tech-camera movements and DSLR flexibility. So if I can find a way to attach a lens to the body without an Actus or similar camera in between, I’m going to see if it works. I can always leave the Hassy to Fuji adapter on the lens in the case.

Since the 72, 90 and 120mm lenses are the ones I use 80% of the time on 4x5, I imagine a 24, 35, and 40/50 will become my new Go-To lenses on the GFX for me. From what I’ve heard, the Nikon 19mm PC-E is exceptional but the electronic adapters for Nikon don’t seem to be out yet because they will only facilitate the use of Nikon E aperture lenses and the market is small for those.

Adding the Cambo Actus certainly adds a bit of bulk (about 2 and half pounds or a little over a kilo), so I understand your reluctance to add it, but there are some pretty serious limitations to just using FF 35mm shift lenses on the GFX. Chief among them is that the FF 35mm shift lenses typically have a 62mm image circle (and sometimes less and almost never more). That means some pretty serious limitations to the movements you can get with such lenses. If you compare that with your Hassy V mount 40mm which has a 78mm image circle there is just a huge difference in the movements that are possible. That said if you wanted to go with a 24, 35, & 50 set of lenses then there are some excellent options with the 62mm image circle. The Canon 24 f/3.5L II looks very good on the GFX, and at 35mm there are several options: the Zeiss C/Y mount 35 f/2.8 PC is very nice, you should also look at the Olympus OM 35 f/2.8 PC which is dirt cheap and performs pretty well; there is also the Canon FD 35 f/2.8 TS, and the Leica R 35 f/4 Curtagon. Finally at 50mm I suspect the new Canon 50 f/2.8L TS lens would be the obvious choice. Now all of these wider lenses would have the pretty limited 62mm image circle (a couple like the Leica R Curtagon have an even smaller image circle), but they would give you some movements. If you want more movements, then I don't think you can find anything wider than 50mm, but there is a Mamiya 645 50 f/4 shift lens that you might look into. There are also 75mm f/4.5 shift lenses for Pentax 67 and Mamiya RZ67 you might look at as well. I don't think there are any tilt/shift adapters for the GFX--at least I haven't seen any--and with the Cambo Actus there may not be any developed, but for your preferences that would definitely be the way to go if some are made. Good luck finding what you are looking for.

A Mamiya 35mm f/3.5 on a shift adapter would still work--645 has 70mm IC, so it's still larger than the FF TS/PC lenses.

SMC Pentax 645 35mm f/3.5 is also an excellent lens. Mirex makes a good adapter that takes for Canon EOS. You'd then just need to get a Canon to Fuji GFX adapter. If there's one that has shift movements then you'd have shift in two directions at the same time.

Doing a little more digging, Kipon has announced shift adapters for 5 medium format lens mounts for the GFX. Here is a link:
http://kipon.com/en/articledetail.asp?id=114
It includes Mamiya 645, Pentax 645, Pentax 67, Hasselblad V, and Contax 645. They aren't available yet, but it looks like they will be in March. For 35mm that would give the Schafphoto the choice of Mamiya 645, Pentax 645, and Contax 645 (although details of aperture control are not clear). He could also use his Hasselblad 40mm. Pentax67 has a 45 f/4 and what is reputed to be a very good 55 f/4 as well. Lots of good choices with these new adapters, but wider than 35mm it will still be difficult to find wider image circles.
