I normally only photograph pre-professional and professional dancers for this series, but Jordan Matter's "Tiny Dancers" inspired me to give it a try with these two girls. The smaller one is just 10 years old, the other girl just turned 13. They couldn't do as much as my usual dancers, and needed more direction, but they still turned out pretty good and we all had a good time.
These first shots with August (13 year old) are at the garden and around The Art Institute of Chicago.

You do so well with dancers....
Thanks, Jim! I do enjoy my collaborations with them. On Friday, I'm heading to Gary, IN, with a couple of dancers to do a shoot in some abandoned buildings. Looking forward to that.
Terrific work. You obviously have good rapport with your subjects bringing out a variety of expressions, poses. The young subjects seem to be participating in a free and open way. I might lower the brightness of your dancer in the first few. With these, I would like to see more of a tonal contrast between her and the setting. This contrast plays out very well from #7 to the last.
Thanks! They actually did really well, considering the higher skilled and more experienced dancers that I usually work with. If nothing else, we had a really great time together!

My favorites are #3, #4, #5 and #7 with #5 being the strongest because of the great lighting. In #1 and #2 the dancer is competing with the complex background. Great series!
I really like 1, 5, 7, and 10. In the rest, the backgrounds compete too much with the subject for my taste... I feel like the dancers are getting lost in fairly ordinary surroundings.
Nice series, #3 is my winner, #11, hurts just looking at it Oh, to be young again, hope these 2 move on to bigger and better things, looks like they have the heart, desire and talent to make it
Thanks for posting
