OK, this time pushing the 'cropability' of the a9's sensor to the max. One thing as a bird/wildlife wannabe photographer I like about crop sensor is the pixel density.....that which the a9 doesn't have. Sure the pixel density is better/higher than it's direct competition--the D5 and 1DXii--but it is lower for example than an a6500/7Dii/etc.
But I'm surprised by how much I can crop with this sensor.... this image I think is the max I can go. The bird in the original capture was at best 1/20th of the frame-
I'm sure glad I didn't get rid of the 'kit' lens 27-70mm.
Not my focal length at all, but it can ride in a pocket and not weight me down while I'm carrying the soon to be FE100-400 on the a9. The 100-400 will probably be close to a permanent mount until Sony gives up a 400 prime in e-mount.
So new life for the 28-70-

How did you find the AF tracking for these fast moving birds with the Sony a9? I just tried tracking the razor bills and puffins with the omd em1 mark ii and found that the tracking at high frames per second isn't that great so wanted to see if the sony a9 AF compares with tracking and high frames per second. Thanks for your response.
Sasha-
A hawk is not a superfast bird, compared to a Puffin they are slow but so far I'm finding the
a9 completely competent at AF focus and AF tracking at 20 frames/second. So competent in fact I just sold my 1DXii. It, the a9, is not perfect but the 1DXii wasn't either. Note that in the second blog post it was AF-tracking with a Canon lens
In 11 days our lives will change when the FE100-400 arrives.
Today I shot with (nothing posted anywhere) a9 + 400DOii + 2.0TC and I also find that satisfactory. Of course what pleases me may not please anyone else http://www.stopitdown.com/2017/06/20/af-tracking-with-the-sony-a9/ http://www.stopitdown.com/2017/06/27/sony-a9-metabones-iv-t-0-57-canon-100-400ii/
Yes am very keen to see how that combo performs can the Olympus omd-em1.2 with the 300mm for tracking action. I am really hoping the Sony a9 is better even though I had good success with puffins and a lot of focus bumping over a few thousand shots. I was just hoping for more than the first couple of frames to be sharp in a sequence of tracked frames at the high fps setting. Having said all of that the puffins were inevitably coming towards me at very high speed and erratic patterns. Perhaps one of the hardest settings for any camera. I will wait for your feedback on the 100-400 bare and with the 1.4 TC especially relative to the 400 DO IS II with 1.4 TC combo. Thanks for sharing.
Sasha, no problem and will do.
The she-boss and I also shoot Oly M1ii, she has the 300/4 and I use the PL100-400.
If you are ever bored look at her work with the Oly, she makes me wonder why I ever
had the heavy Canon kit, it's worth a minute scanning her Flickr page- https://www.flickr.com/photos/114407047@N06
