Nice complimentary colours (plumage details on back and reeds). The shadow is quite interesting, unusual to see that (or at least for a photographer to share an image with that shadow on there).

These are looking very good, and I assume that the Sony FF BSI sensor does its job to contribute to the rich colors?
I pre-ordered the 500PF and the D500, but it is not looking very good with regards to getting it before my two birding trips in may
So I am more or less pushed into re-considering the 400DOII, simply because it is available!!
As I would be using it on my Sony A7rII for some time before being able to update my body (perhaps to the coming Sony A7000...), I am weighing the pro's and con's again. Would you agree to these:
Nikon 500PF on D500, also with 1.4TC:
-better AF
-better reach without TC
-less weight
-better match to the sensor due to being native.
-cheaper
Canon 400II DO, also with 1.4TC and 2.0TC:
-better lens ultimately (contrast, color)
-better IQ (color) due to the Sony BSI sensor
-better performance with both TC's
-Longer reach at 560mm f5.6 (with coming Sony A7000) to 500mm F5.6
-Longer reach at 800mm F8

Your image above does get my IQ blood rushing again. Is it just me, or is the 400DOII ultimately the better lens when down to pure IQ at 560mm f5.6?
Well thanks (I think) but the shadow of the Crane above this Crane is what I liked most about the image. Now that you mention it I can see some ditching the image because of it. I guess I'm a bit strange

IQ would be very very close in my opinion without TCs. With TCs the difference is greater with the DOii winning but as always get Geoff's opinion since he is way more experienced and knowledgeable than I am. But before you plunk down the shekels for the DOii make sure you see what Joshua does with the 600. You know I can't field a 600 but maybe you can.
I walked 3 miles today with the 500PF and never strained, but the light was crap/grey/spitting snow and ISO became an issue...just remember on a crop body the 400mm length can bring home more than many would believe and today F4 would have been golden compared to 5.6 or worse with the TC.

The shadow of another crane was one aspect that caught my eye - thought it really added to an already great shot

I could field a 600mm, but I simply would not want to anymore. And I cannot afford one. The Canon 400DOII is just about the maximum limit. And it is also about the llimit of what I am willing to carry along at 2.1 kg. The 500PF is even better of course.
Anyway, I thought I had worked it out, but the (lack off) availability of the 500PF seems a bigger problem than I realized.
So I will let fate decide: if the 500pf is not in half of april, I will go for the Canon
