First day out with my new A9 (Christmas came early) Just wanted to do some test shots.
Adapted to the old Canon 500/4 IS VI and the MC-11. Maybe I also need to try it on the MB IV. Pleasantly surprised with performance though even with the 1.4x. Need to learn this amazing camera quick before a bald eagle outing next weekend. Wouldn't you know it, as I began to pack up a Bald Eagle came in to terrorize a flock of Coots and had one pinned underwater for a while. Even though it was quite a ways off for 700mm, I missed the majority of the action.

Congrats on the early Xmas present. Looks like you've got it working so far. The MC-11 seems to be the top runner for adapted Canon glass these days. Although I've never tried any of the Metabones myself.

X-posted with FE thread but might as well post here also...
A9 with 400DOII and 1.4TCIII via MC-11....
Geoff,
Very nicely done. Besides the 1 stop difference between the Canon 400mm DOII have you found much difference in the performance of the Canon lens and the Sony 100-400mm GM lens both naked and with the 1.4X Teleconverters?
Also wondering if you have made any comparisons in the output working with the A7rIII in crop mode yielding 18MP with the 100-400mm GM lens (equivalent to 600mm) and the A9 at full frame (24MP) with the Canon 400mm DOII with the 1.4X teleconverter yielding 560mm?

Thanks.

AF performance is still better on the native Sony GM lens for action. But for these types of shots the adapted glass is just as good. Both lenses are excellent IQ wise. For me it was all about the extra stop in taking out the 400DOII to the yard for these. Dreary days and an hour or two before sunset made for some low light.
I don't have the A7R3 so haven't compared. The few images I have in my catalogue from the A7R3 are not suitable for comparison as I didn't shoot the same things as I did with the A9 those days.

Thanks Geoff,
I did make the mistake of trying to shoot on high speed which resulted in a whole lot of totally out of focus shots.
I’m trying to determine if I want to upgrade my lens to the VII model as I still have my 1DX. According to Sports Illustrated photog Patrick Murphy Racey, the Metabones is supposed to be better on the older glass. At least was his experience with the 600 VI. I noticed a a few times a message on the LCD that said “focus cancelled”, not sure what that was about. I was using back button focus which caused me to inadvertently hit the supposedly better placed video button so I’ve switched the AEL button to also be focus on since I have big hands.

Awesome capture, John! That was using your Canon 600mm f/4 Mark II with MC-11, right? Was that locally here in SoCal?
Thanks Joshua.
Yes, it was shot near my daughter's house here when I visited her last week. And with the Canon 600mm f/4 + MC-11 combo which I really love but still wish for a native 600mm or 500mm f4.

Yup, and between the two, my preference would be a 600mm to be sufficiently different focal length-wise from the GM 400mm.
