Dennis you are always kind. Thank you.
Yes sir, still have my Svea, but used an Optimus 99R a whole lot more.
No way I carry either these days
An observation, probably not the right forum but what the heck The a9, as one would expect I do believe considering the larger pixels, is a better performer than the A7Riii when pushing ISOs. Common knowledge I'm sure but reality knowledge for me having hopped back and forth between the two bodies.
Another observation. Poof and I travel a bit and on the last 4 (maybe 5) trips I've had the a6500 with me but not used it. I've preached about the beauties of crop sensors for wildlife over and over (no one listens) and pixel density BUT the form factor/ergonomics of the A7Riii and a9 have me completely spoiled....so the a6500 will be marketed soon.
Hi there,
I see that you used the Canon 400mm f4 DOII for this shot with the 2.0× extender.
IQ seems to be very good. I am planning to buy this lens with both extenders, coming from a Pentax DA560mm f5.6 lens. The Canon equals the Pentax lens with the 1.4 ext. but will have much better AF.
I also use a Sony A7RII, so I am wondering what route to go:
1.) Canon 400 DOII with 1.4 ext. (occ. 2.0 ext.) on the Canon 7DII
2.) Canon 400 DOII with 1.4 ext. (occ. 2.0 ext.) on the Sony A7RII with sigma mc-11 and crop.
Would you have any thoughts on this? I could also upgrade the A7RII to the A7RIII for the money of a Canon 7DII.
I assume that IQ is best with the A7RII, and on sensor PD-AF could be more precise, and silent shutter could prevent shutter shock, but how does it play out in the field?
Chris,
I'd recommend NOT using the 400DOii with or without any TC on the A7Rii(2).
I'd highly recommend the 400DOii + 1.4TC on the 7Dii. In fact the majority of my BIF
work was with the 7Dii (when I was with Canon and even owning 1DXii at the time), here is
example- https://www.flickr.com/photos/medicineman4040/16344980809/in/album-72157662637724813/
I've used 400DOii + a9 (duh) and a7Riii. The a9 does way much better than the a7Riii but the a7Riii
is doable depending on size/speed/etc. of the bird.
Something else to consider, Canon is (I hope for the Canon shooters) maybe close to releasing the 7Diii
which surely must compete with the D500......me, I just handed off my a6500 in hopes of an a7000 and
the mythical FE 200-600mm
Any of that help? Ask away, just remember in the big picture I'm just a snapshooting noob but like must
I have an opinion
Every time I use the a9, I like it more and more. Took a short vacation to Longboat Key, FL and spent a few days with my parents and aunt and uncle. It's a tremendous place and I was really pleased with the A9's performance I used the 24-70 2.8 GM and the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II with the Metabones 5 in the basic mode.
I can't recommend the Canon / Sony combination for fast moving birds, but for slower birds and most everything else, it was really nice.

Thanks a lot for your reply, it is much appreciated.
I am looking to switch from Pentax to a system for birding that has fully developed AF capabilities.
Next to first class AF I am also rating portability very high, since I mostly hike and cycle in nature, and am not someone who shoots from a tripod or from a car window. I was set on a Nikon D500 with the new Sigma 500mm f4S, but the Canon 400mm f4DOII has caught my attention for its qualities together with higher portability.
But coming from a Sony A7RII and a Pentax KP, the sensor in the Canon 7DII has scared me off so far. That is why I was also contemplating going one system with Sony and use an adapter.
I am fairly sure now about the Canon 400 DOII with both extenders. What I am now trying to figure out, is whether to aim for use on a Sony body, or a Canon body.
So yes, I see the (most likely) possibility of waiting for the Canon 7DIII, and hope for IQ on D500 level. But even if it won't match the D500 IQ, I have become more and more aware of birding needing a set-up to take advantage of unexpected moments, and do that fast and reliably. I may well get the sigma mc-11, and use the A7RII for incidental static shots next to a 7DIII for the rest. Looking at the age of the 7DII, I am sure the 7DIII is not too far away.
