I'm good with the sharpness of the Sony given the other advantages. Truth is the sensor resolution is just as important so far for what I've shot. The A7Riii gives a truer scale of what the 100-400GM + 2.0TC can do.
The real advantage of the DOii is light. F11 sucks compared to F8 unless in Florida/Utah/Cali/etc. Sun.
So on the recent Florida trip many of our walks started before Sun up...then I'd carry the DOii; later in the day I'd switch out.
For any given/random trip not knowing I'd take the zoom. Poof and I still shoot mFT and I still get more shots than she does PL100-400 vs. 300Pro, but her shots when she gets them are better by a subjective amount.

Too many words, sorry
p.s. Get Itsed on this, he still has an EOS 500mm for an opinion (a lens I don't miss at all, or rather my back and knees).
p.s.s. not that you asked or care, I just walked in from stalking the neighborhood hawk (he won again). I was using the A7Riii + MBTv + EOS 1.4TCiii and 400DOii, not a joy trying to BIF with it here in the mountains/Sun set was about 20 min's away. And again in Florida it was not a problem.
I was walking the reserve looking for BIF at distance but this guy popped up less than 20 feet away. Merit the super super focus acquisition of the a9 for even a chance-
Dennis I forgot something probably minor. With the a9 I've gotten AF in far worse light but the ISO shoots sky-high, and even as good as the ISOs are with these newest Sonys I don't want 25K.

AF. Even in the crap shadow the owl was standing in.
I've yet to MF anything with the a9.

That speaks volumes for the A9's capabilities. Good to know and encouraging.
Jrobichaud I can't say how really sharp the images are with the 100-400+2.0TC because I only pixel peep so far into an image. Not against pixel peeping but My peepers that I'd pixel peep with are getting old and it would only do so much good!
But speaking of the combo, when waiting on the 100-400GM to start shipping I was wondering if/when even longer FE mounts lenses would come. Having the 400DOii (my only remaining big white) I'm at the point of wondering to self if I even need to keep it. I'm that satisfied with the zoom. There have been occasions where (early early in the morning or my owl in the dark) when I've put the DOii on, but those times are rare....just something for me to ponder.

The A9 and FE 100-400 were perfect for the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show this week... love the expandable flex spot focus and no blackout!!
Wow!!! That looks really good for 10,000 ISO!
Were you on the grounds or in the stands (as a spectator)? Just wondering if I could bring my A9 and 70-200 2.8GM into the stadium during the rodeo.

Thanks! I was in row 1 of section 124... closer to the chutes end than the roping end. This row is in the "Action Seats" section and gets you close and low. I shot from ISO 6400 to 25,600 in raw and cleaned up the lighting color cast in post.
RodeoHouston is very good about the security entry... no hassle at all about lens size or using a 'professional' camera. Go and have fun!!
Lindrel, great action shot
Robert, very nice shot of the pelican. when I was younger MSG (or MSH?) use to be the most popular tiny stove for backpackers. For me, I used to use a Svea stove. Not so good as one had to pressure pump I and it used white gas.
