LBJ without the 2.0TC I'd come home with nothing....and 800mm was often not long enough. Just a huge thank you to Sony because I believe it is landmark that we can now use a 2.0TC with a 100-400 zoom and still have IQ, has this ever happened before? Just like the a9 was a bellwether so is this ability of 800mm in a handholdable package.

x2 on all that... can't wait to see what sony is going to do with the 200-600, if indeed the rumors are true.

Fingers-crossed. If the FE/GM 200-600 ever does become a reality I know I would wait in line to buy that lens

OK I don't think the 200-600 will be a GM, maybe a G but I think the rumors are true...it is the answer to the Nikkor 200-500 and all the Sig/Tam 150-600's.
I think/bet at the next big Photo industry expose (is that in March?) the a7000 will be announced ALONG with the 200-600.
Wouldn't that be cool-same battery for the R3, the a9, and the newest cropper. I'd be all in because back in my Canon days I got more keepers with the 7Dii than the 1DXii because of cropping needs but I don't like my a6500 like I do either the Riii or a9 for ergonomic/button/wheel reasons. The a6500 sensor/AF-C tracking is fantastic but the Riii and a9 have spoiled me for ergos.

LBJ I've been thinking about the 200-600 'if ever' lens.
I don't think it will take a TC 1.4 or 2.0 like the 100400GM.
So 600mm would be it.
At Conowingo over Thanksgiving 600mm would not have helped me BUT
in all the venues we've visited (Viera, Stick Marsh, Green Cay, Circle Bar B, etc.) in
Florida 600mm would easily be enough.
I bet (based on 12-24, 24-105, 85/1.8, etc.) track record the 200-600 will be outstanding
for a suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper zoom......especially on the a7000
What will decide it for me is the WEIGHT.
I've had the 150-600's 1st and 2cd gen. for what they are they are great BUT they get heavy
quicker than the 100-400mm. I think a lot of that is the moment arm and the torquing against
my core and of course my dinky little arms.
So the kg's will weigh heavily on that purchasing decision (pun intended).

Speaking of weight, the more I used the RX10iv (daily!) the more I realize it's sadly just a matter
of time (I do hope to get five more years of A7x and a9 use weight wise) before even the heavy Sonys become too heavy.

Not sure! Just these types of threads are what talked me into the Nikon 28/105/70-200/200mm F2 etc and wanted to see more photos. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Testing the out the Sigma 135 ART with MC-11 on the A9. I prefer to cover action with the 70-200 GM which performs superbly, but I wanted to see how well this combo could track. It went surprisingly well in the center, though not as consistently as native lenses. Some bursts hit 90%, some 50%. In the top photo, it was tracking his face with face detect on every frame for about 5 consecutive frames. I was impressed.

I mostly intend to use it for event photography to replace my Batis 135 and this weekend's testing sealed the deal, weight be damned. I just want that extra light.

If you have kids and the budget, you owe it to yourself to get the A9 and capture them in youthful motion. It's such a pleasure to use.

As usual, slightly edited from this camera's fantastic JPEGs.

When you set up the A9 to shoot raw and JPEG, I don’t see where I tell the camera to send one of the other to which card, or what type of JPEG file I want, for example JPEG fine. Am I missing something? On my A7riii I can find these in the menu.

Nothing like the freedom the GM 100-400 + Tc's have brought us. But also don't forget about the old monopod + gimbal head. While not as agile as free-handing, does go a long way to dissipating the weight and avoiding dragging around kit + heavy duty tripod.

But I hear you. I shoot with a few that come with the big guns and heavy duty sticks. Doesn't take long for them to set up and wait for the action, by then I've already run ahead chasing the action Ha Ha.

CP+ is but a few weeks ahead. Perhaps we will have a better idea where Sony is headed soon. I've not uncovered any reliable 200-600 info to date, other than the rumor and my own wishful thinking. No intention of getting rid of my APS-C A77II + Tamron 150-600 any time soon.

At least with CaNikon super teles there's a healthy used market to help with the budget. Going to be a while before we can take advantage of that trickle down with the big Sony primes

Time to sell some stocks!

Let me know how flexible the files are! My one concern with this cam is going from D810/850/A7rii files to this... not for the resolution but the DR and how flexible the file is.

It is less intuitive on the A9. You use Setup (toolbox icon) page 5. As you know, you select RECORDING MODE -> Sort(JPEG/RAW)
From there, you choose the slot that will receive the JPEG files, the other will receive the RAW files.

Select Rec. Media -> SLOT 1 will write JPEGs to Slot 1 and the RAWs to SLOT 2 and vice versa.

In Playback menu, Select PB Media will be the slot you review AND the files you share wirelessly.
