Finally have some acceptable weather today.
May try to get out and shoot a bit more with the Sigma. From the little time I've spent with the lens, I can say that I’m not in love with the bokeh, but probably need more time to have a better idea.

As sharp and clean as it is, I'm still on the fence about keeping it. Not sure how much I'll look forward to carrying this, and a small bag of lenses, around for a day of shooting.

Anyhow, here are a few shots I posted to the other thread.

There are no asphericals on this lens so it should have clean inner specular highlights. Mechanical vignetting is going to always be an issue when shooting fast lenses wide open on full frame. However this lens shows 'cat-eyes' too close to the mid-zone. I have not seen raws yet but to me, it looks like the oof transition zone is on the harsh side, Resolution looks optimal at f/2.8 for the center and f/4 for the corners. CA seems very well controlled but I didn't see images a 1:1 or a torture test yet. Contrast also improves when stopping down. This is my impression from the numerous samples I've seen. Thanks for the test Guy!
I wonder how it will compare to the Batis 135 on the aspects I mentioned above.

Bokeh rendition is always subjective and it is also dependent on other external factors.

No kidding. My clients have never said "ugh, look at that cat's eye bokeh in my wedding pictures!" They simply do not care.

Most aspects of an image are subjective. However, there are controlled ways to measure foreground, transition zone and background out-of-focus 'smoothness' when testing and comparing lenses. It's also very possible to objectively inspect specular highlights (bokeh balls) quality which always impact overall rendering.

This may or may not be crucial for photographers or clients...and that's subjective.

I don't think your clients would care about this thread the way we do!

As of a few years back, during my days with another format, I didn't even know or pay attention to the various shapes of bokeh balls. Meat balls, yes ! Is that progress or the other way around? Probably getting pickier in my old days is more appropriate, huh?

Here is a shot from yesterdays second outdoor shoot with the Sigma (plus a few more lenses). Once again nature had a surprise for me with tones of mosquitoes or whatever they were..made it quite annoying to shoot but during one particular part of the session, I just used them as part of the scene since the light hitting them created some interesting bokeh balls around the subject. It looks good so I am considering bringing my own mosquitoes to my next photoshoot

Bokeh in this image looks like this lens might be too good to pass up!

Bokeh is like movies. Best film ever for one guy is total crap for somebody else.
Objectively speaking (lame pun here ) there's no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' bokeh. You may like or dislike a particular type of transition or shape of OOF details but you simply can't measure the smoothness, nervousness or creaminess of the background. How do we put this in numbers or curves like we do with distortion, CA or resolution ?
Some people loves those doughnut rings from mirror lenses, some can't bear them. It's all is in the eyes of the beholder.

Sorry folks just not feeling good today but I checked my camera and I had EFSC on. Just took a few snaps and there is a difference between off and on. I'll run some more tests this week

Oh, sorry to hear that, Guy. I hope you get better.

Now, unless you were shooting at shutter speeds of greater than 1/1000sec it should not matter, right?

Thanks Guy.

Clearly this lenses superpower is it's soft background bokeh, combined with it's excellent wo sharpness.

I'm impressed with how good (good=soft, bad=harsh, distracting) the background bokeh is even with the very busy backgrounds that you've chosen. I suspect this means the lens has harsh foreground bokeh but I didn't see any images that show both front and rear bokeh simultaneously.

1/1000 and faster. So little Brooks inside are fine.

Given the nasty backgrounds I chose again on purpose. I think it did very well. Also EFSC off I can see in the LCD easily the difference so it might be more than we think. I might go out early in the morning and maybe repeat a couple shots too. There is a little foreground in the truck shot. See if I can get some more like that

I hope you are feeling better tomorrow bud.
EFSC 'off' may make a difference as we saw on the Sony 50/1.4 ZA tests. Your bokeh tests wide-open were shot from 1/3200 to 1/4000s.
It would be great if Sony gave us the option for the camera to automatically turn EFSC 'off' at shutter speeds above 1/1000s...or at least give us a custom button!

Yep it happens with any of my fast lenses so I am always changing it. I requested that feature on some sony page for things like that but I am not holding my breath :/
