The Olympus E-M1 had a readout speed of 1/16 and the E-M2's is reported 3x faster, so 1/48. That's within the ballpark of Sony's FF readout speed for the existing A7sII, which has fewer pixels but is also a 2x larger sensor. Sony's press release claims the A9 has a readout speed that's 20x faster than the A7II, which I'm guessing was around 1/30 so that would put the A9 at 1/600.

If it's really 1/600s then that's pretty exciting but in that case I'm not sure why you would even use the mechanical shutter for flash photography.

That's huge too! Means my A-Mount 70-400 G2 will work better than ever on an EF mount body.

Very nice. I've grown to enjoy Sony photography gear over the years! Do echo with some others about lens choices. Still a bit behind Canon/Nikon.

For normal x-sync speed shooting (1/250 and slower) that's correct, you could use the electronic shutter with flash. However shooting at higher flash sync speeds (HSS) requires multiple pulses from the flash, each of which would be much faster than a 1/600 sensor readout speed.

It looks like Sony found a way (stacked CMOS with 20x faster data readout) to make Silent shutter the default option. It seems to be distortion free and without the extra noise we get from our current silent shutter implementation. The mechanic shutter will really be an option for when using flash.
It should be amazing to shoot sports without any blackout and silently.

From what I read, it does not seem Sony was able to implement Lossless compressed RAW though...

Yes. Not because Canon/Nikon don't have also good sports/PJ gear but because they missed to jump on the mirrorless train earlier on. The A9 shows that big bulky sports/PJ camera gear is not a must-be anymore - and who doesn't want to reduce weight even if the lenses still remain long and heavy for this purpose? Problem for Canon and Nikon is now that Sony has years of experience with FF mirrorless ahead of them - even if they would get started with it tomorrow. Not sure, but seeing how the camera business struggles, I wouldn't be surprised to see a merger between Canon and Nikon with Sony becoming #2.

I checked out Sony's A-mount system, and the 300/2.8 and the 500/4 are the only lenses not replicated in Sony's E-mount system. I'm guessing that Sony's FE lens short list is
16-35/2.8 GM FE
300/2.8 G FE
500/4 G FE
135/1.8 GM FE
24/1.4 GM FE

Added: some FE's

Though I'm still happy with my A7II, this is an amazing looking camera and portends great things to come. Bravo Sony! As to the price, I'm reminded of the scene in Blazing Saddles, "somebody's gotta go back and get a sh*t-load of dimes..."

Sure....with lesser mechanical constraint and faster BSI sensor technology... most MILC easily beats DSLR DR/AE/AF performance from here on. All game(s) are now based on the faster chip set. Canikon should switch to FF MILC long ago...

The one hands on said he was at 30% battery life remaining after a day of shooting and 2,000 frames. As to weathersealing, I'd have to think it would be, but I have yet so see anywhere that says it is, which is concerning. IMO, it would be a huge misstep to release a camera with these specs and fail to properly weather seal it.

I prefer current EVFs to OVFs anyway, so I'd imagine this one will be rather incredible.

Yeah, I saw that video. It's odd that he was seeing such long battery life when compared with Sony's estimates. I know the manufacture's estimates are usually conservative but it was a giant different. Perhaps the guy in the video was testing with the vertical grip and extra batteries?

I've done some more searching and can't find anything about weather sealing. That's really surprising and I think would severely limit the appeal of this camera for pro use.

They need a 300/2.8 and 400/2.8 at sane prices to be able to complete in the sports arena. Although I have a feeling they don't want to...

The same thread of argumentation was brought up by many when the A7 series was first released - that there is not enough FE glass available for this kind of camera. And what happened? Sony has now made a very good variety of FE lenses in just a few years. I simply expect Sony to make more tele/tele-zoom lenses similar to Canikon in the soon future, problem solved.

Looks like an awesome camera!

I would be really sad if the new menu system does not trickle down as a firmware update to current Sony A7rii though!

I wonder if this AF module vastly improves 3rd party adapters like the TAP and Metabones IV.

I didn't want to give away my brand new A7R II for half of what I paid for it, so I decided to keep it.

Did you notice that the 300 f2.8G and 500 f4G are special-order items only? Sony doesn't manufacture these lenses unless someone places and order. That will have to change if they have any hopes of getting into the pro market.

Not really.

The camera does indeed impress.

However, now that it's out there, I think it would be easier for Canon and Nikon (esp. Nikon) to build a high-end mirrorless competitor to this ... than it will be for Sony to build an entire super-telephoto lineup that can match Canon's or (esp.) Nikon's.

The current Sony super-telephoto lenses are over-priced duds, based on old Minolta specs, failing to match Canon super-teles, let alone Nikon's new lineup of FL ED series.

Therefore, taking 20 fps through lousy lenses is not as exciting as taking 10 fps through the best super-telephotos made by anyone.

Thus, while the camera's specs are exciting to review, the lenses to put at the end of it are a buzz kill.

I believe it will take Sony longer to bring an array of competitive super-telephoto lenses than it will take Nikon to come up with one helluva mirrorless equivalent ... that will instantly have access to their peerless super-tele prime lens selection.

Cameras are outdated within a year ... lenses take much longer to grow old.

Sony's camera is new ... but its super-tele choices are the lowest, oldest, and least-impressive of all.

That will be my main consideration when thinking about this camera. I'd want to use my existing Canon glass. I'd even rather use my Canon 100-400II versus the new Sony just because I already own it and the Sony one is $3400 CDN....yikes!!

Now, Sony, reduce the speed but keep everything else intact or close and put in a 50MP stacked sensor then I would jump in with both feet. Oh, that's the A9r, huh? Okay, when can I preorder that, please ?

+1, the only hope they have now is more fake news from their fan boys
