p.3 #2 · Iceland Summer 2016 with A7RII and Zeiss lenses

Yes, great, thank you!

I will return to Iceland this summer. My last time was 2007. Now I have much better gear of course, and greater skill, and I think possibly more problem with over-thinking and taking everything too seriously, but we'll see how that works out. As for my over-thinking, usually it's not a problem in the moment, I use what I use. But from my perspective now, I wonder how I will want to interpret Iceland this time, and how many lenses I will bring. I like to often have a choice of Zeiss or anti-Zeiss in my bag for any focal length, though some days and some places are clearly one or the other. The anti-Zeiss option is smoother and dreamier rendering. I can see Iceland going either way, through my eyes.

My own problem with getting too Zeissy -- not commenting on anyone else's choices -- is that I have always had a strong tendency to get really into texture and detail and somewhat lose sight of the whole composition. I've tended to see that way since my view camera days, though I backed away from it in my early digital days, and also by choice now with some vintage lenses.

It's also a little bit like my own use of "clarity" and "structure" or sharpening in post processing. If I start to use those sliders, thinking "Oh yeah, this looks better" then I know I better back off from what I think looks OK. And then in a month I'll look at it and back it off even farther or get rid of it. These days I'm avoiding such post processing altogether as often as not, and I guess because I have the choice of some Zeiss lenses when I'm in the field. Natural and brilliant lenses are much better than post processing. But still, for me, sometimes it's still something of the same problem. It's lucky to have such a problem. Who would have thought cameras and lenses would be so good as the capability we have now, with the a7rii and Zeiss lenses.

Fantastic! I've enjoyed all of them. Hard to choose a favorite, but I'd probably pick 2, 9, 19, 41.

As for the wider lenses... Kinda hard to recommend since you're not using DSLR anymore, but what about Samyang 14mm AF? Zeiss 16-35mm f/4? Sony 10-18mm f/4?

Maybe I will try the Samyang XP 2.4/14mm when it gets available for Sony E-mount. Looks promising. But the size and weight is about the same as the Zeiss 15mm ZF.

Mostly for handheld snapshots and family pics. From the above images #23 was shot with the GR. And I posted some more GR images from Iceland in the GR thread:

A song I'm always thinking of when looking at Boris's photos of Iceland:

The band is Icelandic, by the way, and they sing in Icelandic.

Thanks Snopchenko!

Since we are talking about songs from Iceland, my two favorite bands are:

Valravn (from Denmark, but often singing Icelandic songs)

Eivør Pálsdóttir (from the Faroe Islands, but also singing Icelandic songs):

Last year I've seen a live performance of Eivør in Munich and had the chance to talk to her after the show. She is really cool.

Beautiful images!

My favorites are 2,10,19,42,52 and 55, I think the more intimate landscapes like 4,42,and 52 are very important variations among all the magnificent vistas.

Personally I think contrast and saturation are a little too strong at times, and I prefer a little more texture/ shorter exposures of the waterfalls like in Ronnys shot of Axlarfoss .

Thanks twoeye and telyt!

Regarding saturation and contrast: the saturation slider in LR is in most images around 0 (or slightly raised), but I've often raised the contrast which also has an impact on the saturation.

I've often shot the waterfalls at different exposure times but nearly always prefer the images with the longer exposures times with water with less texture. But I know that some (many?) people prefer more texture in the water.

7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 44, 51, 53, 56 are the "few" favorites I have, with maybe 27 my overall favorite. Wow, Boris, what a set!!! Just to think that you had to work around there being too many photographers around, and changing weather as well, Wow! What people who don't know you don't realise is how much dedication is required to get each and every shot just right (best composiition, best lens, best light, best exposure, best filter). Very, very wow!
That said, your end result looks like you are more heavy-handed with PP than you used to be. Maybe that is what Iceland in summer looks like...

Thanks Annapurna and Philippe!

My PP seems to polarize this time. Some people like it and some not. Although I'm not sure if I really have changed anything compared to my previous images.

Maybe some of the people here have never been there?

Iceland can really be like that, in real life. Light changes so fast and from one extreme to the other. Plus the landscape itself is so extreme as well, with so many different colours all over the place, rugged surfaces, water, fog, clouds, ash, etc.

I think you got them just right Boris and a true source of inspiration. Now I need to go through my thousand of photos and edit them as well
