Finally some decent shots. Looks very good outside the bokeh balls . The GM does have more separation or 3D pop but that is expected.
Excellent comprehensive review that showed me everything I needed to see. Bokeh balls I can live with. I'll pick up an FE 85/1.8 while I'm waiting for the Loxia 28mm to materialise.
And anyone who doubts your advice that with Sony cameras focus is best achieved on vertical lines and not horizontal should look at the Focus Speed videos in that review to see the camera fail to find focus whenever the focus spot goes near the horizontal railing.

It's not "advice", that's simply how the OSPDAF are laid out.
Hopefully the next gen will have some, or all, cross-type - like you see on DSLRs.

Actually, it is advice, based on how the OSPDAF points are laid out. As in: "Because of the layout of the OSPDAF points, it's advisable to focus on vertical rather than horizontal lines."

i was trying to make the distinction for others that this wasn't just Guy's personal opinion (which i find very valuable, but that others may question to their own detriment) but rather there is in fact a technical reason that the A7r2 OSPDAF system won't lock on to horizontal lines.
in this case, i would modify your statement to be: "you are crazy if you try to focus on horizontal lines because it simply will not work with phase-detect (contrast-detect may kick in after a bunch of hunting, not sure)"
to me advice is "hey, if you love to write about the news, go to journalism school, just be prepared to live in a very small apartment your whole life"
I would like to ask you guys for suggestion ang opinions regarding the 28-70 kit for a7.
I am planning to buy the sel 28-70 lens for my sony a6000. I wanted to have a zoom lens that could match the actual lenght of the 100mm or above lenses. As i was searching i found out that the 28-70 full frame could give me a 42-105 field of view when i mount it on the aps c sensor of my a6000. So i am asking your opinion if i am on the right track to buy sel 28-70 to achieve my need of a zoom that could match the 100mm lenses. Coz as of now i have the kit lens 16-50, sigma 30 f1.4 and the samyang 12 f2. So i think the missing on my gear is a zoom to have more than 100mm lenght.
I am an amateur photographer and on a tight budget. I was about to go on sel 55-210 but i found out on the reviews of others that it is not sharp.

For 100+mm for APS-C on a budget check out the 18-105.
I put a late pre-order in, here in Australia so my estimated date is not until May. I am looking forward to see the tests/shots everyone takes before I get mine.
I pre-ordered from adorama but my preorder says nothing. Ill check on the 30th and cancel my order if it is not shipped, and will just get it from a place that has it in stock.
This is a no brainer for me.
I owned 85GM when it was first released but ultimately sold it. It was a very nice lens but I was never wowed by it, the way I had been wowed by Nikon 85 1.4D a while back or Canon 85L.....both have interesting look, to me GM was an excellent 85 1.4 lens but nothing special. Also I found the AF to be pretty slow on my A7R2 and with my always running 4 year old, I got a lot of misses, the autofocus motor was just moving at a slow speed.
From all the reviews I see that this new 85 1.8 is a faster autofocusing lens. And it is very sharp wide open. $1000 less than 85GM, I think it is going to be a winner. I appreciate the side button too, I will program it to be EYE AF Button, it is the most logical place for it.
Amazon tried to charge me but I had to cancel for a week. Had to buy something more important for a gig next week. I hope these are available still than. I'm pretty confident I will be able to order one in stock on the 8th. I have a 85 ZM to use.

The benefit against the GM not covered in the review is that it opens up the aperture during focus acquisition. (Just like the FE 55/1.8 and FE 35/2.8)

give them a firmware update or two, i'm sure they'll get rid of that behavior

Probably not, if they are doing it to correct for focus shift...
if you look at the conversation, you'd see that i was replying to Fred, who had commented that the new 85 focuses wide open (or nearly wide open). and i was joking that they'll muck it up (although, i actually don't think that).
in any case, a lens that opens up to focus (eg the new 85) is not concerned about focus shift. the lenses, eg 85GM, that focus at shooting aperture (ie stopped down) are doing so to avoid focus shift issues (at the expense of light gathering for faster focus acquisition).
