if you look at the conversation, you'd see that i was replying to Fred, who had commented that the new 85 focuses wide open (or nearly wide open). and i was joking that they'll muck it up (although, i actually don't think that).
in any case, a lens that opens up to focus (eg the new 85) is not concerned about focus shift. the lenses, eg 85GM, that focus at shooting aperture (ie stopped down) are doing so to avoid focus shift issues (at the expense of light gathering for faster focus acquisition).
so your point is actually backwards.
My point was correct, it was just my understanding of your comment that was backwards...
I (mistakenly) thought you were suggesting Sony might fix the stop-down defect in the GM lens with a firmware update.
Just bought a copy of FE1.8/85 from a store. The lens is really nice and compact, build quality is good enough; auto focus speed is about the same with the Nikon 85 1.8G, it's not slow, but not so fast

Nikon 85 1.8G is a world champion of autofocus speed, in comparison with 85 Gmaster. I would be glad if AF is on the same level with 85 1.8G

I'm afraid that if the 85GM didn't wow you, the new FE 85 will have a much harder time.
Fred, I would be wowed by the fact that I paid $1000 less than I had paid for GMaster. When evaluating these lenses, I can't help to have that price factor in my mind. I know I should not, but.....
I ordered the FE85 from BH on March 11, and my order now says "processing." I have not heard from them, and I'm not sure what that word means. I would think it means that it will ship soon.

This is exactly what I'd like to know. I wasn't impressed with the Batis AF speed. And while I'm not a sports shooter, something as quick as the 85G would be sweet
Processing doesn't mean anything, but yours should almost certainly ship today, as I ordered mine this morning and it's been sent to warehouse for shipping, so I'm sure they have stock for all the preorders.

Not sure about the a7, but it works as it should with the a7rii...Got mine from Adorama... shipped yesterday, here today..I think the AF is a little snappier than my Batis, not scientific, just from testing around the house...
Looks pretty good to me...Nice and sharp wide open..
Full Size converted from RAW in LR no added processing
If I understand you correctly I just went in to my bar, with the lights off...
Looking through the VF it was dark, but when I hit the AF it brightened up and locked focus...did it wide open first, then at f8 (2 sec) then all the way up to f22 read (5 sec) locked on.
For those that have the Batis85, can you please post your impressions on performance/image differences between it and the Sony 85/1.8?
I have a Batis, had the Sony85/1.8 in my shopping cart last night, but decided against pulling the trigger.
The Batis is very nice indeed but another $300+ in my pocket (along with 100g less weight hanging from the front of my camera) with no downside would be nicer
