I found the AF speed to be just OK - not nearly as quick and confident as my Panasonic G85 + primes (like my 42.5/1.2 PL). Sometimes it missed entirely. Using the latest firmware on my A7RII.
John that's sounding like a bad lens all around bud. Try one out if the box if they let you.

Yeah, I am not saying it's the fastest focuser in the world in dim light, but it has been very sure for me, and as good as my FE 55/1.8 at least. It's certainly not a perfect lens, but it's very, very good and for the price it's outstanding.

I find that the 55/1.8 ZA has one of the fastest AF on the A7RII. If you are saying it's just as good, that's very encouraging.

Yeah, sometimes their display copies are not the best. We'll see. Don't have time (I think) today to go test it again or a new from the box copy. Also found it has some noticeable PF at really high contrast transitions wide open, but nothing that ACR didn't fix completely with one click.
Did some quick testing on continuous AF, and the lens performed pretty well. High keeper rate, though admittedly, the speed here is pretty minimal. Got a pretty funny shot, though, as my daughter realized she was going to run into me if she didn't turn:

I have to say, I haven't looked through my FE 55 files to do a proper comparison. My gut tells me the 85 has a touch more, but it's honestly not bad for a lens like this. It controls it notably better than my EF 100/2, though that's not too hard to do. It definitely crops up in high contrast areas, but it's not a major issue to my eye, especially given the price, but others who are pickier may feel otherwise.

I'm really not sure about this. I didn't do a comparison so far but I have the impression that it has a bit better LoCA control but worse purple fringing. The background blur of the 1.8/55 shows more CA influences as well.
Thanks to all who tested this lens and posted the results, I could spend my whole life hitting the like button on FM, but I think this lens will be making it's way to my bag sometime in the near future.

Yeah, like I said, it's a gut feeling, not a comparison...I don't generally shoot my 55 in situations where LoCA is an issue, so it doesn't crop up much.
I got my new (used) Batis 85mm yesterday so I did some comparison shots with the Sony 1.8/85mm at the park today. I'll have to wait until after work to process them, but I did notice that the FE is slightly wider than the Batis. It is close enough that you probably wouldn't notice without a tripod, but it is a difference. More soon!

If true, that may be another reason I'm holding on to the Batis
Shot on a tripod with the built-in lens corrections on, you can see how the Sony is a bit wider than the Batis and the difference increases if you check the lens profile correction in Lightroom.
Comparing CA of the FE 85mm, Batis 85mm, and the FE 55mm...
This was shot with the Sun just out of frame to give strong back lighting to produce CA and potentially contrast differences. The lenses were auto-focused on the statue's waist so don't get too caught up on sharpness of the 100% crops.
No PP other than cropping and checking the LR CA box for the second set.
