Jordan,
were you able to figure out the focal length controversy between 85 1.8 FE, Zeiss 85 1.8, and Gmaster? 85 1.8 FE renders things closer than the other two lenses. Is this because this 85 is closer to 90 or 100, or is it that the other two are shorter than 85 in real life?
I don't have all three to shoot against each other. I will say that the FE 85 and my Fuji 56 on the X-T20 have essentially identical fields of view. I also tested the FE 85 against my Rokinon 85/1.4 and my Canon FD 85/1.8, and the FE 85mm was very slightly shorter than both those lenses (and we're talking very slightly...probably half a mm in focal length).

Awesome work!! I thought that the Batis would show even less loCA. The FE 1.8/55 is visibly the worst lens in that regard.
What's the SLOCA like on the 1.8/85? The secondary axial colour on the 1.8/55 is even more annoying than the regular LoCA, (and much more so than LaCA) because it's even harder to deal with....

If I recall correctly, the Batis has noticeable focus breathing... it changes FoV slightly when focusing near vs far. That may account for the difference when comparing it to other lenses (depending on the subject distance used in testing).
Not just the FE 85/1.8 but a few oldies as well:
* Minolta MC ROKKOR-PF 85mm F1.7
* Minolta MD ROKKOR-X 85mm F2
* FED Industar-61 52mm f/2.8 (M39)
* Helios MC 44-3 58mm F2 (M42)

Yes, because of focus breathing, FOV may change depending on distance. When comparing lenses for field of view, it would be more precise to perform it at infinity distance.

Even at close distances (5-20 feet), I found the difference to be pretty minimal between the FE and Batis 85mm. I only noticed because I was flipping through pics on the back of the camera and it was just enough to make the statue move slightly.
I agree with Jman13 that it is probably <1mm difference. I just found it interesting as another minimal difference between the two lenses. I am also interested to see if the LR lens profile for the FE closes the gap. I set adobe to update before heading off to the coal mines this morning...
From what I recall in both JASON Lanier and camerastore reviews they were shooting these at about 15-20 feet so def not at mfd. Fred Miranda wrote:

The LR lens profile correction noticeably brightens the FE image, but doesn't effect the FOV. The center of the image is corrected ever so slightly for distortion, but as the FE distortion is less than the Batis the change is more minor. I've included the original 3 pics for easy reference with the new LR corrected one. Again the FOV differences are very minor, but still fun for us photo nerds right?
These were taken from about 6-8 feet away with the same manual settings on a tripod.
Sony 85mm f1.8 vs Batis 85mm f1.8 @2.8 for loss of contrast due to back light...
They look really close to me. Perhaps if the sun was in the frame the FE would lose more contrast. I will say the Sony a7ii was registering a -0.3 EV difference at the same settings so perhaps it is more of a t-stop difference than a contrast one? -shrug-
Just picked up the 85/1.8 Sony FE this afternoon . . . . hopefully to get it out for some infinity shots on Saturday against the 85/4 ZM. In the mean time I'll see if I can find a willing model for some w/o candid shots.
Just got this lens this afternoon. However I can't find the lens profile for this lens on LR 6.10. Did miss something?
Thanks are any advice in advance.
Edit: Sorry, my mistake. Can find the profile on the ARW files taken later. Some of the earlier test pictures were taken in JPG only and LR couldn't find the profile.

I'd love to see another comparison against the ZM!
Yeah, looks like the weather will cooperate this weekend. So far I took a few quick infinity shots to check the corners wide open (looks similar to Guy's results) and a few candids of my daughters at f/1.8. Certainly very sharp w/o for candids, especially in the very important 1/3 off-center portion of the image.
The PF wide open is surely there, but ACR seems to automagically take care of it 99% (maybe a bit of final tweaking in ACR).
This lens reminds me of my long-gone 85/1.8AF-D Nikkor: PF wide open, sharp in the center, very very good stopped down, reasonably compact, etc. All that, except the Sony is much more sharp in the corners wide open.
EDIT: Toying with the idea of just sucking it up and getting the 85Lox too . . must sell some of my other gear, must sell some of my other gear, must sell some of my other gear
John sounds like you got a good copy. Really happy to hear that and look forward to more comments on it. Jannik, Jordan, I and others seem to really like it a lot. Seems like we all have good copies. I mean I put my ZM 85 up for sale. But I really need a 50 so want to make sure Im Not crazy what I'm seeing out of this lens.

Yeah, I'm prepping for another trip to Europe right after school gets out (Portugal + Spain) and want, as usual, a really compact kit, but with high IQ. The ZM was great for that last year in France/Italy/Switzerland, but sometimes AF and f/1.8 would have been very very useful.
So far, the travel kit is looking like:
16/3.5 AI Nikkor + Adapter
21/2.8 Lox
35/2.8 Sony
85/1.8 Sony (AF, bulky/light, very good IQ, fast) or 85/4 ZM (MF, compact/light, great IQ, slow) or 85/2.4 Lox (MF, somewhat compact/heavy, super IQ, f/2.4)
180/4 APO CV or 135/3.4 Telyt
No matter what I do (85/1.8 or 85/2.4) I'm keeping the ZM as it's just so small, light, great IQ for luggin' up mountains (I ain't getting any stronger at 51 years of age . . .)
