I want that 40mm 1.2 badly. I love the 40mm f2 adapted to my A7r II, hopefully it has the same great rendering.

+1

The only downside of the VC 40/2 is that the adapter nearly doubles the size of the lens (I use a Canon EF version with a Metabones III). The 40/1.2 will obviously be longer than the 40/2 but perhaps only 50% longer and you get an extra 1.5 stops. Frankly, though, I'm astonished at the level of interest in the 40mm compared to the other two lenses. I didn't realise that so many FM members were 40mm fans.

I wonder if these really do 5-Axis stabilization on IBIS-equipped body. Getting focus distance to electronic interface from a manual lens seems to be nontrivial since for example Zeiss Loxias, Zeiss ZE/ZF lenses do not have it. Without focus distance one is left with 3-Axis only. Not that it matters that much (3-Axis IBIS is super useful with my Zeiss APO 135/2) but when Loxias 1st came out they were, in a few places, said to have 5-Axis too when they in fact only can have 3-Axis.

I wouldn't have thought it possible to transmit focus distance to the camera from an MF lens, given that the lens elements are being physically moved by rotating the focus ring rather than being moved electronically by instructions from the camera body.

Count me in as another fan! In my film days I loved the 2/40 OM, in my Canon + M43 days I loved the voigtlander 2/40, the little Canon 2.8/40 and the panny 20 on m43 for hiking. I just see the world in 40mm!

Looking forward to the 40/1.2. 40mm is my favorite general walk around focal length.

Hopefully it's 42.5 mp sharp across the frame stopped down a bit from wide open, has great sun stars, and can be pointed into the sun without flare issues .

Good luck cramming all those features into such a fast AND small lens, if the price isn't gonna be extremely high.
I guess it will be a bit like the 35/1.2 which unfortunately is not for me because of optimization for close distances.

On the other hand, it could be something else to differentiate it from the 35/1.2.

Well, Makten, one of us is going to be disappointed because I'm really hoping the 40/1.2 will be optimised for close distances.

Damm, they should have mofified the VM 1.7/35 which is the most impressive lens I have used to date (taking price, size and usefulness into consideration). But maybe they managed something similar with the 40.

I'm excited to see Cosina expanding their e-mount line-up, the more choices, the better. Fortunately, I'm not feeling any GAS, looking at the announcement: I don't need more than one macro (already have the 90 2.8), and the 35 ZM covers my 35-40mm needs.

I'm really looking forward to the new native 40mm especially.

The 35/1.7 VM and the new 50/3.5 Heliar VM are my current favorite adapted lenses and I have a rather comprehensive set of Voigtländers already (10mm e-mount, 15mm SWH III VM, 21/1.8 Ultron, 35/1.2 v1 Nokton, 35/1.7 Ultron VM, 40/2.8 Heliar, 50/1.5 Nokton VM, 50/3.5 Heliar VM, 75/2.5 LTM). Also had a few others previously for my NEX-6 that were not a good match for the A7 series...

Hoping to see the 40mm and 65mm at CP+ this Saturday since those 2 are mentioned to be "available for demo". In last 2 CP+ the new Voigtländer lenses were only shown in a glass vitrine but couldn't be tried out.

I'm very interested in the 40/1.2 - I shoot a lot with 50s but I'm regularly wishing for something just a tiny bit wider.

However I'd finally decided I was going to get the Tech Art Pro and the VM 40/1.4 mount... decisions.

True enough. If they badically added a correction element or made some spacing change and it got to 37 they might just call it 40.

Whilst it's true you can add a mild teleconverter to the back of a lens and reduce it's total length (from front element to sensor), the 35/1.2 is already quite long there would have to be a considerable reduction in length based on the images of the new lens, so it seems very unlikely it's the same design that has been adapted.

It's not that getting the distance information is that hard, I think it's more that 5-axis stabilisation is not that big a deal - the extra two corrections (horizontal and vertical translation) are of limited effectiveness, and overall quite minor compared to pitch and yaw correction.

Of course it's possible - you just add distance sensors to the helicoid, just like most zoom lenses transmit focal length to the camera despite the elements being physically moved by rotating the zoom ring rather than being moved electronically.

I was thinking about that some last night. It's possible as well that Sony and or Zeiss said no to that lens as it would be a better all around lens than the Loxia, and as small as the ZA 35/2.8, It seems more and more apparent that Sony is generally controlling what third party lenses can be released, and giving their own product a year or two for market saturation before allowing competition.

This 35 is basically making me switch back to Sony.

I love love love the Nokton Classic, shot it on film and digital, but there were two things I didn't like about it:
1) cheesy silver nose
2) .7m min focus distance. I didn't want to drop $200+ to get a (good) helicoid adapter, which is just another thing to fiddle with.

Selling my small Fuji kit now, and shopping for a cheap A7 haha. My wife will lose her mind.

a 40/1.2 sounds awesome, and about time.

it's really hard to believe the sizes of the 35/1.4 & 40/1.2 in the photos will be accurate though. way too short for each.

if the optics of the nokton remain similar, it's very believable. The current nokton's are about the size of the FE 35 although the tapered design makes them appear even smaller!

I'm not a fan of said character though, I like a cleaner look without the distracting bokeh.

Nokton 40mm RAW file. I'd say it looks an awful lot like the 35/1.2 VII.

What a great set of offerings from Voigtlander! I currently have the 20/3.5, 40/2, and 90/3.5 SL-II lenses and the VM 35/1.2 vII.

It will be interesting to compare the characteristics of the 35/1.4 and 40/1.2 side by side. The 35 will be a predictably dreamy character lens, but it would be nice to have it in E-mount. The 40/1.2 could replace both my 35/1.2 and 40/2 and could make a great one-lens solution for a day out if it performs well stopped down. Like others, sometimes I find 50mm too tight and 35mm too wide for a general walkaround lens. The 40/2 was my preferred single lens "compact" full-frame solution when I was shooting Nikon. But on an adapter, it's as big as but lighter than the 35/1.2 which currently fulfills this role.

The 65/2 is pretty interesting as well. The APO designations are a bit loose with Voigtlander. My 90 APO Lanthar still has some fringing wide open that cleans up by f/5.6. But my Zeiss 100MP cleans up by f/5.6 too. If the 65mm is near APO at f/2 it will be a very tempting lens, with native mount, EXIF, 5-axis image stabilization, and much more compact than the 100MP. But to replace that lens, it will have to be amazing close up and at infinity.
