I've read the past threads on a replacement foot for the 400mm DO II going back to 2015 but would really like to see a picture of the CR -80 installed that Petkal recommended. Looking for the answer to two questions. How easy is it to use as a carry handle and does it clear the hood when reversed? Any help appreciated.
The CR-80 will be really close to the lens, so I don't think you will be able to use it as a handle. It should fit inside the hood when reversed but I really don't see how you will have space if you want to use it as a handle.
I had the CRX-5 on mine but had to use the regular (higher) mount which to me was too much room between foot and lens. I like my foot the be as close to the lens as possible with just enough room to use as a handle with thinner gloves on. The CRX-5 Low mount on 600II and 200-400 meets those requirements perfectly.
The CRX-5 low mount interferes with the reversed hood so I couldn't use it on the 400DOII (or 3002.8)
My newest foot for the 400DOII is from Henjar Photo and is the long foot listed for the 300 2.8 IS II. Here is the link and a picture of it on my lens. It sits just little closer to the lens than the CRX-5 but still I'd like it a bit closer. The owner of Henjar Photo is willing to customize feet for you so I may have him make me another one closer to the lens although as you can see in the photo I can't get much closer without hitting the reversed hood again. http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/h122-long.htm
Thanks the picture, that does still sit high, like you I like mine very close. My lens was supposed to be here today but it is delayed due to a storm we had. I have the crx 5 low mount on my 200-400 also and love it. To bad it will not work for this. Interesting to see what I come up with. I use the Wimberley AP-602 on my 800mm and 600mm and love it, not great as a handle but I love the feel of it shooting handheld.

I think the crx 5 may work (see Arbitrage's post above). My DO arrived today so I'm looking too. First and foremost the hood must fit reversed and then a good handle would be a big plus. A close to the lens fit would also help.

The CRX-5 normal is a little further from the lens than the Henjar pictured above. The CRX-5 low mount is perfect except the hood is always a little wonky when reversed....it actually still goes on but the screw doesn't fully tighten because the foot is interfering ever so slightly.
Hi Rob. If you can live without a perfect fitting reversed hood then the Hejnar Photo low plate for (600/800/400/2.8) is nice. Still can use as handle and look how long the handholding support is!! http://www.hejnarphotostore.com/product-p/h118.htm

Let me know if that one interferes with the reversed hood on the 400DOII. Maybe I'll pick one up if it doesn't. I went out today handholding with that low profile one and it was awesome. I was going to return it but now decided I will keep it!! RobAmy wrote:

The refurbished lens just came in , it is mint. Terrible weather for any testing. However the Wimberley foot does interfere, no good in my opinion. I put the crx-5 taller mount mounted in the 2nd hole and it balanced well with the 2x. It just clears the L plate without the 2x on it, I mean just clears. I tried just the stock foot with a RRS plate and hated it. I think the low mount feels the best but the hood is an issue. I wonder how the soft hoods my work? I never used one but it may solve the issue. I tend to stand my long lens up on the hood but this size I most likely will not.
The lens BTW is like new, it came with all the goodies, case, key, straps etc. Can't wait to test it out. Most likely Monday/Tuesday with the weather they are calling for. So far I really like the size and feel of it. Focus seems snappy with the 2x in the house.

I've read that the Aquatech soft hood can be stood on end but I'd still be a little sketched out....the nicer looking LensCoat one is too weak to stand on end.
I've been eyeing the LensCoat one to take the 600 to CR but I always stand my 600 on the hood. Today out in the snow I had both 600 and 400 standing on hoods. But really I packed the 400 with skewed reversed hood today and once in the bag it doesn't really matter. You can still tighten the screw to hold it in place.

I haven't found one yet. I don't think its possible looking at the clearances and even my super low foot is interfering. Maybe someone could make one a little more low profile and not as long as that 600II foot I showed above but I think it won't work.
Although Petkal swore by the CRX-80 for the 300II and 400DOII so I'm not sure if that one would sit in or out of the hood but looking at the photo online it looks like it may sit just outside the hood reversed.

I've never heard of anyone wanting a handle with reversed hood before. If you are carrying it around then extend the hood as it will protect the front element in case you brush by a tree or drop it. If you wanted a handle with reversed hood the foot would sit so far away from the lens it would be horrible to pack and shoot handheld with.
I decide the Wimberley foot I liked best for balance and length, more so when using the 2x. The hood fits but like Geoff's it is angled. So I got the travel hood from lenscoat. It works well. It will stand on the hood but I do not recommend it or trust it. But it works well for the intended purpose. It folds back over the lens and foot just fine for traveling. I had a lens hood cover and that fits great. The travel hood is very secure in the hood position for shooting. When I am local I will most likely just use the factory hood but when abroad I will use this setup. The foot is not a great handle if that is what you want.

That looks to be about as low as you can go with a 400DOII foot!!
I'm looking at getting that travel hood for my 600....is it really sketchy to stand on end? I'm sure I would never try it especially with the 600
