p.1 #1 · Session for Album Cover (more)

This was a fun and unique session for me and I'm always thrilled to shoot this wonderful model. Evelyn is not only beautiful and a natural before the camera, but she is also a talented singer and is working on producing her first album. Of course, she wanted some great shots for the cover, website, thumbnails, etc. and I was game (even though I had shut down business for the winter! Not hard to talk me into it.)

Evelyn and her mother always come prepared with ideas, hair and make-up, wardrobe, and specific ideas about what they want. In this case, she was going for moody and melancholy and we were hoping for weather to reflect that. Alas, we arrived on scene to a full sunny sky at mid-afternoon. I have to admit that I was a bit perplexed in how to work things (the pond they chose had a westward view -- terrible for that lighting) and there were few areas to work around that. They had a lot of confidence in me and were willing to accept whatever we could do to make it work -- and we did! Thankfully, the sun moves quickly in the fall here, and though the setting wasn't quite as dark and moody as we hoped, they are very pleased with how the sun played a part.

I have to put in a disclaimer as some of these are edited VERY differently than what I would normally do, in part, due to the light and desire for moodiness, but also for artistic purposes as requested by my clients. Still, I'm happy and proud to share!

They look fantastic to me. I can see several potential album covers for an "indie folk" singer if that's her style.

I'm guessing you've "crushed" the blacks on #1 a little more than you normally do?

What lens/es? 85L, 135L, 200L?

Love these. Can imagine #2 as an album cover. Well done.

Well, you can't turn blue skies into moody clouds, but I think you did a great job with the "lemons" you had.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Ryan, I used my 85 1.8 for most of them, but my 135L for #2 & #6. My 50 1.4 for #1. I did crush the blacks (a more matte look) and added a lot more clarity and vignette than I normally do. She was going for a "boho" sort of look and feel, but I guess her music on this album is moody. Thanks so much for the kind words!

Thank you! That is my favorite, too.

I agree! It will be interesting to see what she chooses (some of these will go on her website and other Internet sites.) Thanks!

Thank you! I definitely couldn't see doing a sky swap, either. Not with this light! And mid-day, too. Always a relief when it all works out somehow.

I don't think the last is successful, maybe if the eye was visible but the others are quite nice.

Image 2 with bottom cropped.

What is the artist's name so we can check out her music?

Great job!

The last two are just "extras," so not likely to be on her album (maybe just the website.)

Thanks! Her name is Evelyn Cormier, but she's still working on her website. I think it will open when her album is released in the spring? I know she has an Instagram account.

Lovely series. I think you worked with the available light very well along with whatever you did in post. I am not crazy about the hair curls in her eye in #2,4, and 5 though that is apparently what she wanted. Face first, hair second in my view. I like the two full body shots #1 and #3. Just a preference as crops often run into problems like the cropped hands in a couple of these. Knowing what to do with hands, I think, is one of the trickier parts of portrait photography. #4 and #8 are cropped and composed to avoid that issue and I particularly like #4 but it is hard to put too much melancholy in that beauty.

These are nice, but from what little I know about album covers, you will have a tough time cropping most of these to fit the required square format needed for album covers

Thanks for the great feedback. Definitely hard to find moodiness, esp. in that light and with that model. Perhaps introspective is a better word. The music is a bit moody according to her.

Thanks -- yes, glad she has several options for different venues. I've also done posters for her and her backup band, so getting a lot of experience with this.

Hmmm . . . that will be interesting. They only asked that I leave space on some at the top for name, title, etc. Thanks!

Gosh she's pretty.

I work a lot with bands and singers.

One of the things I do when I present them proofs is I make a bunch of small square crops and do little album mock-ups.

It gives the client instantly a visual idea of how these images could be used.

I love making cd covers, so it's fun for me when it gets to that point.

I love this girls hair. Lovely curls!

Cheers,
Sid

7 works for me (with the album title where your watermark is) but might have to crop the bottom.

Some of the others (4 & 5?) maybe don't have enough free space for a front cover (maybe as a back cover with writing/credits over them?).

Beautiful all though.

Good idea about cropping in squares. I will mention that to them to help in picking out the best photo.

I'll definitely talk to them about these things (I can re-crop some if necessary.) Thanks so much!
