Nice review indeed. I have recently sent my A7rII for the Kolari UT mod. I am looking forward to getting the modded camerea in my hands!
I probably need to replace my Loxia 21. Any suggestions for a good and portable 21mm that would work nice on a A7rII UT?
the leica 21/3.4 SEM on the UT should be pretty comparable to the loxia on the stock and it's a bit smaller (though also a bit slower).
both the contax g 21/2.8 and leica m 21/2.8 asph are noticeably smaller than the loxia and good enough for me on kolari UT a7 (everybody has different standards though).

The real sleeper at 21 is the ZM21/2.8, which is very mod friendly. Shot great already on the v2. You can find these as low as 650 USD. LR has profiles. They are all over flickr, so you can search for samples.
The SEM 21 is state of the art, and the lens I would like to see head to head against the loxia on the A7rii in mod v stock comparison. But it's going to run close to 2k used. I have one, but I almost got the ZM21/2.8 as so many liked it.

Sebboh and uhoh7, thanks a lot for the suggestions and the comparison, much appreciated. Your Leica m 21/2.8 asph looks very good, especially in the corners comparing to the g21.
For now, I will have ha closer look (flickr etc.) at these 21mm candidates:
Leica 21/3.4 SEM, Leica m 21/2.8 asph and the ZM21 /2,8

If you're planning to use this 21mm. on a A7r2 and don't mind the slow aperture, consider the ZM 21/4.5 as well. According to Zeiss MTF curves, at f/5.6 it's quite better than the ZM21/2.8. Less distorsion too.

Thanks, artur5, I will consider the ZM 21/4.5 as well. I think I am leaning towards the faster lenses, because I would probably like to use the lens for some astro work. But it is an interesting lens.

21/4.5 has the steepest ray angles of any zeiss lens M wide, so those curves are "film only", where angles don't matter. It's true it has little distortion. There is a reason you see basically no one shooting this lens regularly on any digital body.
Sam Lee's NK mod does show it "working", but performance on UT with r2 is unknown, and it would be a gamble, to say the least.
On the other hand you can see pretty good shots at 21mm with the ZM 21/2.8 on a STOCK a7, albeit stopped well down.
Digilloyd calls results at f/5.6 "outstanding".
The reason the 21/4.5 is so famous is the lack of distortion, and that's why it has been tried on every M digital body. The LR profile will fix the distortion in a click, and ZM 2.8's strength is it is quite fast.

Nice G21/2.8 vs. SEM 21/3.4 comparison. I have always wondered about these two. The G21 has such nice bite at the center. The SEM 21 is a more even lens for sure. But given the price, distortion and overall package size, the G 21 gave the SEM a good run for its money.

that's actually the older 21/2.8 elmarit ASPH, not the SEM i compared.

Thanks a lot for the info from this thread. I've sent my A7 to Taiwan NKIR for the UT+, 0.85mm IR cut filter without cover glass. I wonder how the Taiwan UT+ compares to the Kolari UT. Will post testing results as soon as I have a chance.

There are lots of great 21mm available there, but if you already had a loxia 21mm, personally, I think you would be better to wait for your UT mod A7Rii back, and make some comparable tests with others, then the decision.

Does anyone have the new leica cron 28, code 11672.
I recently read the artical: http://www.slack.co.uk/leica-m-resolution.html, it seems the new cron 28 is working on A7 ii from this article, any idea?

That’s the plan. I`m in no hurry buying a 21mm. Just trying to minimize the scope of lenses so that there is less to test. Because of filter size (my filters are 52mm) I have for now narrowed it down to these lenses:

Has anyone tried the voigtlander 15mm ltm version I or II on the UT mod? I'm thinking about buying one after seeing good results with my Voigtlander 28mm 3.5 skopar. Thoughts?

No version 28mm M is truly "working" on any stock A7.
The latest 28 cron might get there pretty easy, as the old one is pretty good even on v2 mod. But if you take a close look at Jono's test images....take them with a grain of salt. For example the M240 old cron WO is clearly OOF compared to new one. Or he just has a bad lens. The center should be very strong no matter what, if focus is correct.
I think some are now using the ZM 25/2.8 with front-end filter on stock cameras.

You are shooting the 28 skopar on a mod, please post up some shots
Both CV 15s, i and ii, never got past colorshift on the M9 or 240. I would suspect the issue is possibly still present on UT. But your skopar has huge colorshift on M also, how is it? Which mod?
It's possible those earlier 15s would work on the NKIR mod, since the ZM21/4.5 seems to.
Hopefully there is less copy variation in the older ones than the III.

I've had the A7 UT mod for about a week and have only been able to take some family snaps. No real testing yet. With the 28mm skopar the color shift is still there, edges are good though. I went ahead and ordered the 15mm heliar ltm so when I get a chance I will post some photos with both lenses. I have very high hopes of using this camera as mainly B+W.
I'll try out the flat field plugin with both lenses and see how well it does with fixing the color shift.

RII number one is on its way to NJ. I decided to give the UT a go. I'm convinced from the testing Derek posted it'll make a big difference on the Distagon 35. If it has an equal impact on the Elmarit 24 APSH, I'll be a happy man.
p.14 #18 · First Sighting: A7rii Thin filter in action
I`m also waiting for my A7rII UT I will hopefully have it in a week or two.
Just hit the buy button on a used Zeiss 21mm 2.8 ZM lens, it will be very interesting to see how the lens preforms on the modded camera. Looking forward to testing this combo.

Right, I agree that Jono's result isn't 100% unbias, but I think we should place the focus on how well the new cron 28 on stock A7ii, and moreover to imagine the performance on the v2 mod and Taiwan master 0.7 or 0.85 mod, as technically the thin filter has the cracking risk. So personally, I am really curious about the new cron's performance on stock and modded A7, particually the corner performance.

Here are A/B comparisons between the a7rII UT and the stock sensor. I don't have the patience to make eye charts like Derek, but there are full-size JPEGs available for download. My Elmarit-M 24 has a bad edge (right side) that may be my fault from disassembling it to see if I could use a front-filter on it, so it's going to have to go to DAG. Ah, the price of experimentation. Still, the improvements on the other side give me hope. The 18 pleases me to no end. It's the perfect size, weight, price, and focal length to be my UWA in the .05% of my shots for which it will be used.
Technical note... shots from both cameras were color calibrated using the shot of a 18% grey card and the tool in LR. The Kolari filter seems to require a little bit higher color temperature and then a big -33 on the tint slider compared to the stock, which was consistently cooler with a +10 on the tint slider. Most shots are about a stop overexposed. I did this to get over the worst of the vignetting with my three biggest offenders (18, 24, 35) so I could quickly see the corners, and because the Kolari's colors made it difficult to judge best exposure. Also, the 18 really needs a center filter.
Still to come, the ZM Distagon 35 (forgot it at home) and the APO-Telyt-M 135 (coming next week). Then I'll try to do some brick wall and bokeh comparisons with the whole family.
