I have the opportunity to spend a couple days up the Duluth, MN area between Christmas & New Years this year and want to know if any one has any advice for wildlife in general. I'm more of a mammal photographer but am interested in raptors as well.
I'm interested to see if you get any info. It seems like a photographer friendly area. I found it interesting that the "friends of sax-zim bog" ( http://saxzim.org/ ) keeps a welcome center open from Dec 10 through the middle of March.

If there are reliable GGOs there I would love to fly down and visit
I'd keep an eye on this site. It's done by the naturalist for the Sax Zim Bog. He'll be up to date on the happenings there. Reliable isn't what I'd call it normally. I've been there the last 2 years in late Dec.- early Jan. Saw a few the first time and struck out last year. So did most we talked to last year. Good luck to you.
I was there last year in early February. Great Gray Owls were scarce but I was lucky enough to see and photograph one. I also had a Northern Hawk Owl nearby. The area is also good for boreal bird species. I used the above resources to schedule and plan my trip. I plan on going back again this year if possible.
