p.1 #1 · Sax Zim Bog/Northern Minnesota Advice

I have the opportunity to spend a couple days up the Duluth, MN area between Christmas & New Years this year and want to know if any one has any advice for wildlife in general. I'm more of a mammal photographer but am interested in raptors as well.

I'm interested to see if you get any info. It seems like a photographer friendly area. I found it interesting that the "friends of sax-zim bog" ( http://saxzim.org/ ) keeps a welcome center open from Dec 10 through the middle of March.

I think I'm going as well in mid January.

Good Luck,
Richard

Here are some links to information on the Sax-Zim Bog. So far as of December 7, 2016, only a few GGO's have been seen.

If there are reliable GGOs there I would love to fly down and visit

So far not too many, but that area just got some snow, so who knows about the next few weeks.

We are overdue for an irruption year, the last being in 2005 and on a 10 year historical cycle.

I'd keep an eye on this site. It's done by the naturalist for the Sax Zim Bog. He'll be up to date on the happenings there. Reliable isn't what I'd call it normally. I've been there the last 2 years in late Dec.- early Jan. Saw a few the first time and struck out last year. So did most we talked to last year. Good luck to you.

I was there last year in early February. Great Gray Owls were scarce but I was lucky enough to see and photograph one. I also had a Northern Hawk Owl nearby. The area is also good for boreal bird species. I used the above resources to schedule and plan my trip. I plan on going back again this year if possible.
