nickrh, routines are not common at all. PS CS uses higher quality routines and this is why yours ran faster. Dont upset the mix, we are testing photoshop here.

18 seconds.... dual G5 2 gig Mac with 2.5 gigs RAM, and 9800Pro card. I'll wager a guess that when Tiger ships (next OS for Mac) in the first half of 2005, this speed will probably be nearly halved. Of course Photoshop will have to be rewritten for this 64 bit OS... figure another few months for that too. This test was done with Photoshop CS.

P4 2.66ghz
2GB Ram
XP Sp2
Ati Radeon 9700
PSCS
With all anti virus and firewall software still running, and it's been over a year since I last installed XP, (apart from the service pack 2 upgrade).
This is a really informative* thread, it's made up my mind that the next laptop I get, (in about a week), will have an AMD64 chip of some kind in it, and the next desktop system will be a dual processor PC. Also, for me whilst the Macs may be faster in some instances they aren't worth the extra cash, for others this may not be the case, but as I said for me it ain't so.
* I know it doesn't conform to all the best UAT proceedures, (hell I used to be in that line of work), but the anecdotal evidence does seem to be reasonably consistent!

Don't forget folks, dual core processing is just around the corner (Intel has abandoned plans to get 4ghz CPUs built on their current PIV). AMD and Intel are both working hard to get them out. Apple is too (should be ready soon in combination with a true 64bit OS...duel processors with dual cores running 64 bit on a 64 bit OS and application...WOW!!). Since AMD, Intel, and apple plan mid 2005 rollouts I'd wait for that before buying anything built on todays architecture.

But I am a little confused because you list the file size as 87.6 Kb, but Photoshop reports the file size as 311.7 Kb. Anyway, I upsized the file to 2000 pxls wide and ran the radial blur as instructed.

Dblink, I tried the XP Services removal guide and lost my Internet connection, so I rolled back my system. Good thing I followed their advice for setting a fresh roll back point. It probably had something to do with the fact that I'm on a Netgear wireless router... Anyway, glad it helped you.

I did some more testing. This time playing with the processors and Cache (CHUD tools).
Powermac MDD Dual 867
OSX 10.3.5
1.75GB RAM (DDR2100)
256k Level II cache
1MB Level III cache
Dual, with level II and III cache: 55s
Single, with level II and III cache: 115s
Dual with NO level II cache, with level III: 97s
Dual with NO level II or III cache: ~4 minutes (got bored and wasn't paying much attention towards the end)
So you see its much more than processor speed. This is also supported by comparing newer macs with less or no Level III cache to older slower CPU ones with more LIII cache. When CPU speed is close cache size makes all the difference. See Sirfishalot's results. lower CPU speed (but a whole lot more RAM ) but has 512k of Level II cache and gets 20% faster results in this test.

the price on the quad xeon is about 28000 listed but we got it for 22000 as we have 20% from dell.
but to restate that this machine is not a pscs machine, this is our test server and backup parts for our other servers, i just told the boys in my department to test it as i was interested in the figures.

A few years agon, a friend came running into my office at work to tell me about his new computer. He just got a 486 DX4 100mhz and I'll never forget the look of excitement on his face when he exclaimed "IT SCREAMS!!"

Hi Siang,
Could you point me to where on the Dell site such a 4 headed Xeon beast lurks? I got over $6000 based on 4 GB ram, 2 235 GB SATA drives. I guess I'm looking at something different!
