p.1 #1 · Hummingbirds of South America

I'm finally getting caught up on some image workups. Each year I head down to Ecuador to host photo workshops and this year I stuck around a little extra to shoot for myself and have some fun with these amazing birds.

My Hummingbird gallery is at:
http://www.shetzers.com/pictures/hummingbird-pictures/

CC always welcome. Thanks for viewing.

Beauties Matt,

1/200 of a second exposures and no wing blur? Is it your flash that is freezing the action?

Lovely presentation Matt. Rich colors, fine details and some excellent comps.

It does not appear as a single flash but you did manage to have just one pinpoint catchlight in each eye though I am not sure if they are from the flash and I don't mean that in a negative way. What ever flash you used did a nice job of filling the important area with light, really amazing results

Fantastic work as usual Matt. I'm really looking forward to heading to Ecuador in January. Im interested to know what size of backgrounds do you use and on what media do you print them?

About 5 different bird lodges around Quito, Ecuador.

Flash setup info below. F20 is critical for the depth of field to capture images like the 2 booted racket tails.

About the Flash setup. I typically use between 6-8 flashes with remote triggers. By using this many flashes, I can really move them around to get the lighting I like, reduce the shadows by a more even fill, and reduce the power, thus getting a faster effective shutter speed.

You are correct about more than one flash. 6-8 normally. I do have to clone out all the extra catchlight, as I can have as many as 5. I just leave one.

I normally print my backgrounds at 18"x24". Over the years, I've printed so many, and now have a collection of about 40-50 that I really like. Every year, I take more photos for the backgrounds to match the flowers I see down there. This year, I'll be adding about another 10-20 backgrounds as after all these years, I finally found some nice orange flowers in a vibrant green bush to match a couple of flowers down there.

Thank again for all the kind comments !
