Hi,
are there different versions of the TAP on the market?
Intend to buy one, but I am not sure if I should get a second hand one for half price or a new one that might be the latest hardware version.
Will use it for adapting 7artisans glass on A7ii
Advice is needed.
Kind regards from Germany.
John
I think you should be fine if you buy it new.
I purchased a Techart Pro one year ago directly from Techart. It has worked beautifully for me on my A7RIII. It was important to me to get the latest device I could and directly from Techart so that if I ran into any issues, I could take it up with Techart.
On the Techart site, you buy the device, then you purchase the any additional adapter for the lenses you want to use with it. I have the Minolta MD and the Nikon F adapters. I must tell you that you have to understand that the Techart Pro does not make your lenses into native-behaving AF lenses. For me, I get the longer lenses in close focus and the Techart helps micro focus. It's not a miracle worker that can move great big glass - you have to work with it some, although it does quite well with shorter lenses.
It looks like 7artisans is Leica M mount so if that is all you want it for, then you just need to buy the TAP and don't have to purchase any additional adapters.

The same Leicaist adapters sold on the Techart site are available at significantly lower prices on eBay.

I assume this post was directed at mine. The Leicaist adapters aren't knock offs, they're the same adapters as the ones that Techart sells at a higher price.

Hmm my TAP is on 6 and A7RIII on 2.0 and it's a little hit or miss. Maybe my expectations are just too high.
As far as the functioning of the TAP, I do perhaps have lower expectations for using it. I'm very patient with it and don't expect it to behave like a native lens. The shorter lenses are easier. The longer lenses - short telephotos - it works better to manually get it within range of what you want to focus, then let the tap micro focus. It does work. I've even used it on a Nikon 105mm f1.8.
I do use back button single point focus but that's just how I work. I'm assuming the TAP is using contrast detection focus so I try to make sure that the focus point I'm choosing has good contrast, if that makes any sense.
Agree. In my experience TAP w/ current firmware begins to fail with heavy back lighting and distance. Close subject seems to bring out full and consistent functionality to include Eye AF.
I would be careful not to use heavier lenses as there can be focus shift issues due to what Fred describes as [TAP] Wobble. Some may claim Wobble is consistently across all lenses. IMO this may be more problematic after using the heavier lenses = wear and tear on the TAP itself ( my opinion only). So I just stick to using with the smallest lenses as a precaution.
when I was looking into M39 to M adapters, i noticed there are different ones based on the focal lenght. does anyone knows if this should make any difference with the techart? I assume it shouldn't matter but not sure.
Hi, I have been playing around a lot last Weekend and noticed, that with my 1.4:35mm Leica Summilux on my A7III, the TAP seems to have problems focusing anything that is not in the middle. The further I put my focus to the sides, the more unlikely is it to get a correct fix (turning green) with Autofocus enabled... Is there a tweak for that? Or just a limitation I have to live with? Thank you :-)

Just a limitation with a lot of lenses with the TAP. There are a couple of M42 mount lenses I have that will work all the way out to the edges but it would seem to be the exception. None of the lenses I have that are 1.4 or wider will focus out past the central region. They can achieve focus vertically down the center of the thirds grid but can't stray from center laterally.

The sole purpose of the different M39 to M adapter types is to bring up the correct framelines on a Leica M rangefinder camera (28/90, 35/135, 50/75) so it doesn’t matter which one you use with the TAP.
I understand contax g lens has to use techart ga3. however, has anyone try (some changes) to use the 28mm onto an adapter that can accept 28mm and fit on the the techart pro.
because of the short focal length, thinking of a ring that accept the lens then attach to the TAP.
But no such ring.
Anyone? Any Idea.

Two adapters, or a custom built adapter that allows you to control the aperture.

FM member sebboh can convert Contax G lenses to Leica M mount so that the converted lens can be attached directly to the TAP. He did a superb job converting a G45 for me and he also does G28 conversions.
1. because of short focal length, I understand it has to do customs mount. ((read Sebboh article on customs mount on the other thread - which is superb job))
2. I want to keep the original lens without change, that is why to look for idea.
3. I do not have the tools, if there is a single mount ((one connect to 28mm , the other end to TAP))
because TAP is similar to CONTAX GA3, TAP works linear (pushing lens in straight line, GA3 motor turn
the contax lens ))
Anyway. Thanks for your reply.

Ah, I didn’t realise that you wanted to keep the lens in its original condition. I suggest that you start a new thread in the Alt forum, asking the same question because a number of members who may have a potential solution to your problem are unlikely to be following this dedicated Techart Pro thread.
