Another update on alternate lens hoods.
I find the Batis hoods quite silly-looking and what's more, they're quite large, making it harder to travel with a full complement of lenses. And more importantly for me, the big goofy hoods are very noticeable on the street.
So I tried a Haoge square hood and it worked on the Batis 25. Then I bought the same hood and made it work on the Batis 40.
The fit on the 25 was loose, and the fit on the 40 was tight, so each hood needed some slight modification in order to keep it solidly in place.
Each hood has a cap, made of aluminum like the hood, so it's a light package overall that doesn't take up much room.
The lens hoods do enough to keep the sun directly out of the lenses, and don't cause any vignette, even on the 25.
Now, I'd like to find something equally elegant and stealthy.
Here's what the 40 & 25 look like without hood caps:...Show more →
Thank you for the info, Ari! I am definitely interested in getting that hood for my Batis 40mm. So, that's the Haoge LH-S24B, right? What kind of modification is needed to make it fit the Batis 40mm, please? Is mounting the hood in reverse position for storage still feasible before and after the modification?

Explaining this is much trickier than doing it, but I'll try.
The Sony hood mount is very similar to the Batis hood mount (and the Tamron hood mount as well), but the small differences require some work in order to make the hoods a good fit.
This hood doesn't work if you try to mount it in reverse, the lens won't pass through the rectangular opening, and the Batis line doesn't have any ridges on the outside of the lens for that purpose.
The hood when used on the 40 is extremely tight, you can turn it maybe 1/4".
This is because the ridges that seat the hood are thick and sit a little high in comparison to the ridges in the hood. They're not perfectly aligned.
So you have to look at where the contact is made between hood and lens, then shave off a minute amount of metal from the top and bottom ridges of the hood on the part that contacts the lens.
Go slowly and eventually the hood will turn all the way and lie square.
But it won't stay in place yet. For that, I applied a thin layer of quick-setting glue inside the hood's ridges (only top and bottom again).
I wiped down the glue so it was more or less at an even level, no bulges, and when it dried the friction between the glue and the lens keeps it in place nicely.
Easy to remove and won't come off by accident.
For the 25, the hood is loose, so apply the glue as described for the 40, and you should be good.
Both of these mods are to the hood only, nothing is done to the lens.
I had a bottle of Liquid Tape, which is black, flexible and quick-drying (about 2 minutes to dry), and it works well.
The hoods are safe enough and far away enough from the front element that when working, I don't bother using the hood cap on an unused lens.
I'll put the caps on when I get home and store the lenses overnight or longer.
You may want to lookup how to imbed images hosted on Flickr to be displayed directly here on FM. People tend to be hesitant to click on image hosts. Check @Schwarzlict and zeitlos posts, for example.
FYI, there is another way to do it. That is to get FM to host your images the way a lot folks do, including myself. You can include the exif data for each image.

This thread is off with a great start. Impressive images, everyone!
Here are 3 images taken with the Basis 25mm. In addition to being a great lens for the mid to far focusing ranges, this lens is excellent for close close-ups.
