Fred, you previously mentioned that you compared the VC 65 to the Tele-Tessar 4/85 ZM. Do you have these crops at hand? I'd be very interested. Thanks!

Re: 40/1.2 - IIRC, someone here (or one of the forums) was at CPP+ and posted some test shots with the 40/1.2 shot on the a7II. I just had a look through them again and my thoughts are the background rendering is not busy like their 40/1.4. OOF background specular highlights have a slight ring edge to them, but nothing terrible. The lens's character reminds me more of the CV 50/1.5 or 35/1.7 than the 40/1.4 with some aspects of background rendering reminding me of the ZM35/1.4. There is some hint at possible onion ring, but it's slight and not in all OOF speculars. OOF foreground rendering seems harsher than background rendering, but I've seen this with a number of other lenses before, so it's probably a tradeoff. There's 'bokeh fringing' evident in front and behind the plane of focus. CA seems minimal in the plane of focus. There's a noticeable amount of SA in the plane of focus wide open and cleans up pretty much by f/2. Though I wouldn't classify the lens as crazy sharp at f/2, it's definitely very good. The wide open SA adds a nice amount of smoothness to character without also making everything look too soft. Difficult to judge across-frame stopped down performance from the samples, but it seemed reasonable. Maybe not great all the way into the corners, but still good. Sunstars are very defined 10 points....Show more →
I hope Cosina is on track to release the 40/1.2 sometime this year, I'm guessing/hopeful it might be around November or December... Will certainly buy it on the first day.

The Australian distributor told me he is expecting them "before Christmas"

Sounds good, at least no hints of delay.
I only know that Cosina stated in an article by DC Watch (at around CP+) that they were aiming to release 40/1.2 within this year, and that means it should come out in early December at the latest... No real indicators after that. I'm keeping an eye on Cosina's website as usual but no info there yet.
Just fishing through a few of my shots with this lens for other samples since some folks don't like landscape samples for rendering. Here are a few for your edification in the event any are useful....All except the shot of water are at F2, the water at F7.1.
Thanks everybody. I like seeing other's explorations of a lens even more after I own it than before. Before, it's driving me crazy with the decision. After, it's like lending someone my lens and they try things in different situations and through different eyes -- collaborative exploration that enriches us all.
I'm stuck around the house overseeing a kitchen renovation and more desk work than I'm keeping up with, so from me it's just going to be my garden in stolen moments.
Bokeh is always a complex quality to explore, but with this lens at least color and sharpness aren't complex: just fantastic.
As for the bokeh, I'm not disappointed because I understood the trade off Fred mentioned a bit back and could see that the bokeh was sort of a complex issue with this lens. I bought this to replace the Loxia 50 in my bag. That was not a bokeh lens but a sharp one (not this sharp!). This lens, like the Loxia, will often have really nice bokeh even though some malign it overall.

A couple at wide open or near enough.
I'm loving this lens. The contrast and brilliance wide open is extraordinary. Hardly wait to try out some macro.
But when I saw your picture of the woman at Redfern Station, I thought: Perhaps it's not so heavy after all.
Hate to admit it but this could be the first sign of weakening. (I'm looking forward to Guy's analysis.)

Well Guy believes it's not heavy; he said somewhere that it feels the same as the 1.8/85 (despite in fact being almost twice the weight)
To me it feels like what it is: a 635 g lens. But a lot more manageable than larger lenses of a similar weight, like the Sony 90 macro. Weight is it's achilles heel, for sure, but when the files start coming out, and they so incredibly clean an vibrant wide open......
But officially I counsel you to stay away from the North Shore until fever subsides.
This lens is very clean - free from aberrations, distortions, fringes, or weirdness in the bokeh. And very sharp, but the sharp areas smoothly transition to the bokeh instead of the jitteriness of some other well-corrected lenses. I'm not seeing any signs of the mediocre flare control that some have mentioned.
