If I were to test bokeh quality between lenses with different focal lengths, like the CV 65/2 vs GM 85/1.4 for example, I would make their apertures equivalent and frame the subject without moving the camera in relation to the subject.

For example: CV 65 @f/2 and GM 85 @f/2.6 (1.31x ratio). It may be a good idea to start with the Loxia 50/2 and make the other lenses equivalent to it....so Loxia 50/2 @f/2 and GM 85 @f/3.5...and so on...

I would avoid shooting a close distances and place the subject at least 5 feet away.

In post-processing, I would crop the 65mm image to match the framing of the 85mm and compare the background OOF rendering.

Once blur is equivalent, the differential will be bokeh character like smoothness, fringing, outlining, inner circle patterns and contrast levels.

In the meantime, a couple more samples wandering around and looking for flowers:

A bug got in the way of this flower shot. Oh well...

The last image of the insect is fantastic! The flowers have nice detail and colours. Wow!

Thx for your kind words. I really like this lens (can you tell?). It is inspiring me to get out and shoot! As for the bug, I am a novice bug shooter. Ronny Olson is the master (if this were his bug shot, the bug would be playing the violin or something).....but I like learning new things. 😊

Forgive me if I missed it, but has anyone compared this to the FE 55 f/1.8?

I'd be interested in knowing how it compares in terms of sharpness and bokeh. I can already tell it is much better corrected for LoCA.

Yes, Ronny Olson is the maestro here. I don't know much about bugs either, but I find the various patterns and facet eyes (hope that's the right term in English) fascinating.

Looking glass rock?

I've never been on top of it, only seen it from the parkway.

If you are asking me, no, we were on Whiteside Mountain between Highlands and Cashiers.

The colours are outstanding.

I'm afraid my request above may have been overlooked... Would you be able to post some comparisons of bokeh and sharpness with the FE 55?

Yes I have the FE 55/1.8 ZA and will compare rendering. The CV 65 differential is 1:2 and very low LoCA. It seems to have higher contrast as well.

My take on the difference between the 55 and this 65, based on having owned the 55 and testing it a lot while only looking at samples and Phillip's review. Obviously my take is worth less than the comparisons from people who can use both lenses together.

Sharpness: the 55 peaks out early and then doesn't improve in sharpness or even loses a bit with stopping down, while the 65 starts out strong and then keeps improving up to f8. Probably starting out a lot stronger than the Loxia 50?

bokeh: the 55 has a style of bokeh that is very smooth to the point that it is a bit "mushy" for my taste, while the 65 has a more detailed bokeh overall. Since bokeh is a matter of taste, the smooth bokeh of the 55 obviously may be preferable to some while less so to others. Overall the 55 probably has fewer flaws in the bokeh except maybe worse onion rings, while the 65 might show rough bokeh or those funny aperture shapes, and some onion rings that aren't so bad from what I've seen.

The bigger issue with the 55mm is LoCa and the VC looks to have no CA issues at all.

C/V really nailed the color correction (always my top priority). I only wish I used this FL more often.

One thing I wonder about (and I may get to find out myself if I buy this thing) is how it compares to the Loxia 50 in terms of what Mike Johnston calls "microcolor." It is part of what I was trying to describe about the Lox 50's bokeh - there seems to be more color info within a color range, sort of color-detail beyond mere resolution-detail or sharpness. You can see it in bokeh as well as in-focus areas. IMO the Loxia 50 has more of this quality than most other lenses I've tried, when I did comparisons to other 50s or 50ish lenses.
