p.1 #1 · SONY RX1R II vs SONY RX1

Can anyone tell me from a real use perspective how the mark 2 compares to the mark 1. The RX1 is my favorite camera. I got a pretty decent deal on it and got it for $850 with the viewfinder. Is the mark 2 worth three times the cost (used prices) in terms of image quality only?

What are your impressions using the mark 2 vs the mark 1 overall?

I had the RX1 and now have the RII. To me it's a significant update (built-in EVF, tiltable LCD, much improved AF,...). All things that I wanted during my time with the original RX1.
However, you ask about IQ only... I'd say it's not really worth 3 times the cost. They both have the exact same lens and 24MP is still a lot of resolution.

I have not had the RX1 only the RX1 R II. For my shooting style, the tilt LCD and the built EVF are essential. I would have been happy with a 24mp sensor but the new sensor from Sony is really astounding in terms of resolution, high iso noise performance and also AF (integral part of the AF).

3x850 $ is a bargain. In the EU, sony hiked the price (as elsewhere) to a whopping €4199!

Luckily, i had bought one at debut. I had to exhange it for a new one after the recall. Now, it is at sony repair center getting a fix (again lucky that I bought with warranty and all) as the image review button died.

Think carefully before you buy one used (the used prices are very tempting to me when I say that though).

We have reached a point in the evolution of Sony cameras where - if you can put up with missing out on a few usability niceties - you can produce very close to the same image quality results for a third the price, if you buy from a good source.

This concept is called the 'threshold of quality'. For most people phones are around that bar height, but even for serious photographers it is something to always bear in mind. The money forgone on new bodies buys 2-3 great lenses, or one fantastic lens. A trip to use your camera. Choice and priorities.

So much of the RX1 Sony got right with the first iteration. I prefer the look of their 24/36 mp last gen sensors.

Does the original version have the Exmor sensor? Albeit fewer pixels?

All sony cameras of every flavor have EXMOR sensors. only the latest ones have the EXMOR-R (back illuminated, RX1R II) or EXMOR-RS (back illuminated, stacked, RX100 iv).

Yes.
BTW, keep in mind that the RX1RII doesn't only have more pixels, but it's a backlit sensor too. This offers great high ISO perfomance.

*edit: like RealVivek already said right before my post

I have owned both cameras, and based purely on image quality, I'd say the price isn't worth it. However, when you factor in usability, I'd say it's absolutely worth the extra money. Having the viewfinder integrated into the body is a significant advantage versus the wart you're going to be searching your bag for or constantly taking on and off to fit it into a pocket, and the AF on the newer camera is a revelation compared to the first one. Having eye AF makes shooting wide open a breeze, and I feel like that lens really sings wide open. If you're only getting the camera to shoot slowly, maybe from a tripod, then some of the advantages may be lost on you. If you're looking for a competent small camera to have on you that's not going to make you regret taking it instead of a more capable and larger camera, then I'd get the new one.

I used to have the RX1 and now have the RXRII and have to agree with the others. The step up in image quality isn't worth the cost (for me), but the usability is. Tiltable screen, built in EVF, improved AF and useable eye AF.

Still deciding. I wish I could do a poll to see who thinks the extra $1500 is worth the improvements of the mark 1 to mark 2. Keep in mind that this will be my one and only camera.

Still the same answer. The II.

Super fast (continuous) AF with tilt lcd and the tuck away LCD gives it the edge.

I'm just curious the kind of people that recommend the mII. Do you consider $1500 chump change? Do you think the rx1rii will retain its value for a while? How long did it take for the rx1 m1 to be in the $1,000 used range?

Did not mean any offense btw, I'm just trying to get an idea if value wise the rx1r ii makes sense at this time for $2450 or if I'm better off waiting a bit.

No camera gear retains its value. Only you can decide what suits your shooting the best.

No, what I'm asking is if the price of the rx1r ii will likely remain the same 6 months down the road or if we'll likely see a price drop. That's why I was inquiring about the RX1 mark 1. I assume when the A7 came out, the price of the rx1 went down significantly?

Sony doesn't really lower their prices. The a99 still sells for $2,000. And its a 4 year old body. And the II is announced. You would think there would be a fire sale already. But not yet.

That being said, Sony doesn't control the used market. Check what folks are selling their RX1RII's for on the B&S board. Might find a killer deal.

Well - I waited for it to come down from the initial launch price in the UK of £2599 - give or take a little - cheapest new price now from an official dealer I can find here is £3,299.99

That's because the yen really shot up recently against other currencies.

It's really hard to predict camera futures, but overall they lose value over time. Who is to say Sony won't release a mark iii in the next 6 months? Or a competitor makes something? You really can only decide if the additional cost is worth it to you right now.

Brexit killed the £. For some people living overseas it's a Godsend (buying property in the UK for example), for others a nightmare (Brits buying imported anything).

The RX1RII price was raised everywhere. In the US, it's currently selling for $3,900!
