Have had no problems cleaning the sensors on my two Mk2's.
After 13 years of cleaning my own sensors using eclipse and pec pads or swabs I really don't see what you guys are all so stressed about.
Go and learn and it really doesn't matter where or when your sensor gets dirty or an oil spot.
It's simply not an issue.

Mine from the factory had oil but a wet clean cleaned it up and I never had any issues after that, how about yourself?
I don't recall if my 1DX had oil when I bought it in Aug 2012, but it was never an issue (at all) over the subsequent four years of frequent use, including summertime in the American SW deserts.

Yes, I did thesame, but now the sensor is different! Canon said!

I think that is my concern as well. It's easy enough to clean the sensor but if Canon now says that the top coating is much different then the 1DX then I'm a little hesitant to clean it and brick a $6000 body.

If you have no problem cleaning your sensor, go ahead. Some just might be a little more hesitant to do so, especially when not just any technician is allowed to clean them as per instruction of CPS.
And please don't tell me to learn about oil spots, you have not seen my sensor.

I remember a 40D I once had was sent to a canon service centre for oil spots on the sensor and it came back with most of it still on. It had to be sent back again with a note. They did manage to remove it in the end. Oil can be very nasty. If the 1Dx2 sensor surface is so delicate then we should be happy that canon sends the body to a super specialised service location.
That same service centre confirmed to me today that they must send oil specced 1Dx2 sensors to Germany (forewarn a two week turnaround!), but they are qualified to perform basic sensor cleaning on that body.
It's not that great having to do without your gear for two weeks and it's good to be aware of it. Not sure if it could be a deal breaker on a new 1Dx2...

So out of interest when your out in the middle of Alaska good luck finding a tech I don't remember seeing a Canon workshop out there the last visit.
Not sure if they have one on the Serengetti yet or on the Galápagos Islands so you either learn how to do it or live with spots all over your sensor when you return from hundreds of lens changes.
Take your pick it's easier to clean than lose images and spend hours cleaning spots.
Basic camera maintenance 101 every guy really should know how to do.
If your going to be so precious that you will rely on a tech to clean a sensor heaven help you when you get a spot on day one of your next trip from a chunk of dust on a lens change.
Do yourself a favor it WILL save you.

That is a very valid point. And it is actually a good idea to be trained for this before endeavouring on important remote trips. That said, you really need to know what you're doing because I'd rather work a little harder on 100 final round mates than to lose a sensor due to improper cleaning. They are quite expensive to replace.

I never clean sensors myself, having made nothing but a mess of them in the past. I send the cameras to Canon, for in-warranty; and usually a private repair center, for out of warranty.

All I do myself is use the butterfly now and then for dust. Anything fluid is not my cup of tea. I tried swabs once on a 40D but eventually I had to send it in anyway and cross fingers hoping I did not screw things up.
If I should get a 1Dx2 I would certainly not wet clean it myself. And if I were to take it on an important remote assignment, especially if commercial, I would bring two backup bodies up for the job.

Got a phonecall from my CPS contact. That "no technician in NL is allowed to clean 1dx mark II sensors" is not correct (The lady at the desk from the repair centre provided false information on that, because there have been 1dx mark II sensors cleaned in NL). But he did confirm what has been shared by someone else here that the sensor surface is very delicate and may scratch when not properly cleaned.
They do have a machine in Germany that cleans the sensor properly.
He told me that if i clean the sensor myself and scratch it i might void warranty so best is to have it cleaned professionally while under warranty and wait for a proper DIY instruction from CPS.
He also mentioned that excessive 'dirt' is an issue with the new camera. And is being reported more and more....

The dirt, [ I think its oil,] is going to be the biggest issue in the coming weeks.
most new body's come with speckled sensors.
Fired a gazillion shots with the loaner. No speck to be seen, i wish i could swap this loaner with my camera... It even needs less MFA on my lenses. (my body needed -2 on all lenses. This one is spot on with most of them).

I've never sent a camera to Canon to have the sensor cleaned. That is ridiculous. Any of my cameras would make a 6000 mile round trip and countless days of travel time.
I've had oil, dirt and dust on 20D, 40D, 5D, 1Ds2 1D2, 1D3, and my 6D - and cleaned them all myself using a variety of approved and unapproved cleaning methods. None of my sensors have been scratched, chipped, marred or damaged from my efforts. When I bought my used 1Ds2, the sensor had hundreds of oil spots, grime and dust and the lens cavity was so dirty with cotton lint and dust, it took me an hour overall to perform the cleaning. I used an AC power adapter to power the camera and had it spotless when I was finished.
I can't imagine that Canon would implement a design that would stop Pro photographers from cleaning their own equipment when necessary. It makes no sense.

No one is discussing cleaning the sensor when it is absolutely necessary and you are 'in the field'.
(I'm in South Africa this december, and if the sensor gets dirty again, i will clean it myself.)
Still does not take away these two important issues:
Oil and Different sensor surface.
I am not in alaska, or any other remote location. I don't rely on income from photography. My camera is barely used and still under warranty, why on earth should i clean the sensor from oil myself when i can have it done and not void warranty. It makes no sense to you perhaps. But to me it does, and i think to some others it might as well.
This topic is created to give some owners of the same camera (and maybe the 5dIV as well, not yet confirmed that this camera has the same issue) a heads up, and be informed that cleaning the sensor of this camera might be a bit more difficult than previous models.

Camera returns with a complete bent battery housing! Slot doesn't take any battery because it is bent. Called CPS again, looking for a solution...
