This week there happened to be one of the lenses up for sale here in NZ, so I snapped it up It'll be the wife's first lens for her new Leica. Looking forward to seeing the images she produces with the combo.

The bokeh of the c/y 50 planar is pretty busy wide open. As for the Lux, I think the pre-asph versions(a la Mandler design) are much closer to the C-Sonnar look, IMO. I've used them all, and I think the C Sonnar has the best people look, then the Lux pre, then whatever else you want to throw in the mix.
A fair assessment. I never used the CZ CS50 or C/V 50/1.5 Asph but remember when they were released, with most of those early images being shot on film (RFF). CS50 focus shift was a major topic, but is virtually irrelevant on MILC. As for CZ P50/1.4 C/Y and the Summilux-M 50, I have and enjoy both of them but the 'lux has far smoother bokeh, and that eternal Mandler look. The Planar is as sharp as anything you will find when stopped down, although not exactly endearing in rendition. I'm smitten by the Zony 50/1.4, but the sheer mass is daunting.

Bummer. I have the opposite and more expensive problem. Wanna switch.
Btw this thread pushed every used price up now.
Not surprising with the amazing images in this thread. Where are you even looking that you see used ones in stock? Last I checked keh/bh/adorama didn't have any? That was what pushed me over the edge to get the B&S one, I just couldn't find other ones (and I hate using eBay for camera stuff).
I've tried everywhere. I may just get the VC 50mm 1.5 . I just don't want to pay the freight . I'm also sitting on a FE 50 1.4 and it's a beauty so this really is a extra lens. I bought 3 lenses in two months so I'm kind Of maxed out right now. I was looking for maximum 700 but no chance in hell now. I had thoughts of selling the 50 1.4 but hard to sell a perfect lens.

Guy you don't want a CV 50 1.5. It's a great lens but you have an even greater lens. You want a character lens to complement your 1.4/50. And that's the C-Sonnar (or you could try Lomography's version from Russia, the New Jupiter 3+)

That's it in a nutshell. But I bought the Lomography Jupiter 3+ with high hopes and, as much as I liked its rendering, sold it almost immediately because the lack of aperture click stops drove me crazy.
David...I'm very curious as well about the remake of the Jupiter 3. I had the C Sonnar 2 yrs ago, and now everyone is jumping on the wagon!! Inalsonhabr the FE 50 1.4 za(love it!) and a Canon 50 1.4 ltm(Japanese Lux), which I swear stopped down is just as sharp @f11 as my Loxia was! I may just stay where I am...
V4 software of the TAP is released? I've had mine for a couple of weeks, and am still getting used to it. I'll have to try the new software.
Fred...super family grabs! Very beautiful family! Thanks for sharing!
I really like Hamish's reviews and share many of his preferences. I've looked into the new Jupiter +3 before deciding on the Sonnar C. Price-wise it was a wash for me as I bought my Sonnar here on Buy and Sell board for $650 and it was in like-new condition. With a little patience, It seems to be about the price you can find one used in a great shape.
The main difference for me was flare control and high contrast for the Sonnar. Although they share similar character, I find the Sonnar rendering a bit less distracting and almost always have it set to f/1.7 where I get the most blur and smooth rendering with fewer aberrations.
The new Jupiter +3 seems to have a more rounded aperture and although I think it's a plus, I would rarely take advantage of that since I don't shoot past f/2 for what I use these lenses for.
From my casual reading of the Jupiter i picked up on the bokeh , flare are not as good as the Zeiss which he seems to love more. Not sure about it myself as even at 650 its not that far away from a used Zeiss which i like the output better. One other thing of note that did bug me was the center falloff of sharpness is dang close to center. Usually with people they are at least slightly off center if not more. His one example of his daughter was very telling how it falls apart off center. Not sure I like that
