I’m torn on whether to replace my excellent 85 f1.8g with the f1.4.. I almost always shoot around f2, but having that f1.4 in my bag would be nice too...
The other reason why I am on the fence is because 85mm is one of my least used lenses - only my wide angle zoom comes out less. I fear that the only real reason I want the f1.4 is GAS, and I need to buy more lights

Yes. Ownership plays its role.
Go wider, I would take 58mmF/1.4 if 85mm is not favorite length.

I have both the 85/1.4G and 85/1.8G as the 85/1.4G is the lightest and smallest 85/1.4 out there now. The 85/1.8G I picked up a used copy from photography student for 150 USD. There are reviews out there placing the 85/1.4G alongside the GM 85/1.4. The Sigma 85/1.4 Art is sharper but not always ideal for portraits

I've owned the SIgma art 85 f1.4 in EF mount, and though I was always impressed by its sharpness wide open, I never brought it with me for shoots on location because it took so much room (and weight) in my bag.
I really enjoyed the rendering of the GM 85 f1.4 when I shot Sony, so perhaps I should rethink the 85 f1.4G... This is a shot with the GM 85 f1.4 wide open (I still really dislike the skintones in this even after a lot of tweaking but oh well)

You sir are a dangerous person to talk to regarding gear purchases haha....Show more →
I also had the GM 85 with the A7rII when it was first released and loved the lens albeit slower in AF. Personally I don't see much difference between the 85/1.4G and GM 85 in real usage except the size 84mm versus 108mm and weight, 595gms versus 820gms.

I had the 85mm 1.8G first,then I got the 105 DC and was struggling to use the 1.8G so I bought the 85mm 1.4G.
It is only a little bit better than the 1.8G but I've been able to use it at 1.6 and 1.4 for pet shots and situations where I can't light. The 1.4 has that little bit extra bokeh and seems a bit more flattering/"softer" for portraits which is fine with me but sharpness is the rage and measurable.
After some thought, I decided to keep the 85 f1.8g after a day shoot pretty much just that in the studio. It focuses so fast, is so sharp at the apertures I'm using it at (primarily f5.6-8), and feels almost like it isn't there on my gripped D850.
Decided that I'd rather spend my extra money paying my taxes (I mean come on, it seems like the US punishes small businesses but that's another topic..) and on lighting and grip gear
The 85/1.8G is a superb lens and very under rated by many Seriously it is such a light/small lens I often keep it in my pocket when I have the D850 and 58G in the streets.
