I got the 85 1.8g version and while pics are sharp and perfectly workable, the colors are kinda mute, less resistant to flare and bokeh is not nearly as smooth compared with my 58 1.4g even if they are both using 1.8. It's renders similar to the 50 1.8g. But in all honesty, If I never have used the 58, I would have been quite happy with the results..
Great shots, speaking of the 58mm, do you find the 85mm complements it or jumping to 105mm makes more sense. I had a 135mm zeiss a few years ago and as fantastic as this lens was it was too long for the way I shoot, often indoors so sold it eventually.
Couple of shots from ye olde archive. I don't have this lens any more (traded it out for a Mavic drone, then ended up with a 105e a few months later…) but I still miss it. The combination of low mass and high IQ just made it a pleasure to shoot with.
Anyone remember this guy? Shot back in 2012 when I was lucky enough to be the staff photographer for the main newspaper in the Cayman Islands. I was assigned to cover all kinds of interesting events (many involving food. Yum!), and when the light was less than ideal the 24 and 85 1.4G lenses always came through for me.
