Recently, picked one of these up. Can't wait to put it through its paces at Spring Training. I was a bit surprised that the minimum focus distance wasn't closer.

I'm pretty sure the focus caught the frame of his glasses and not the eye.

it either the center of the frames of the tip of the nose. hard to tell on my monitor.

It's hard. Stopping down a bit your iso will climb.
But yes, i think the focus is on the line eyebrow and nose.

Manual focus comes in handy, if the focus plane was critical in that instance.

Nice shot! Your AF was locked in on the glasses rather than eye. Only way around is tweak with MF or ask him to remove his glasses.

I got to use this lens last fall for some studio work. I was using it along the 70-200 VR1, the 85 was way sharper and much less exhausting after two hours, and having to move instead of zooming opened up some interesting perspectives.
