In those conditions I typically have a destination in mind, get there shoot it and get out. I don't wander around for the day...I give out way sooner than any battery.

Now...turn the wheel and imagine carrying a DSLR with big lens and battery through 3 weeks of Vietnam all day long. You'll quickly understand the benefits of lighter and less bulky systems when temperatures reach over 100 degrees and humidity is higher than a bathroom after a shower.

A Canon 6D with 24-70 f4L IS zoom is actually smaller and weighs less than an A7 II with the mandatory battery grip and comparable Sony zoom lens - not to mention the Sony requires an external device for GPS data, and that inescapable big bag of spare batteries...

X1D is huge compared to a smartphone - since it has no shutter, why did Hassy have to make it so thick?

Cliff the side you hold with the right hand is thick to make a nice grip. So far I have heard only praise for the grip as people seem to find it easy to hold. I have very big hands and this grip and the way it felt in my hand was a big selling point for me. I wouldn't be surprised that people with small hands might feel differently, however. The part you hold with the left hand I find pretty svelte. I am glad they put in two card slots and that might have required a bit more thickness, but it isn't much thicker than the Sony A7 cameras and it has a bigger sensor and therefore more need to dissipate the heat caused by that large sensor. I hope they did a bit better than Sony at dissipating the heat--it is a mild problem on the A7rII--and if that means a slightly thicker camera then so be it from my perspective. Of course a phone has a tiny sensor so dissipating the heat from it is a non-issue.

While I fully understand and enjoy the benefits of IBIS on the second gen of a7x cameras, I always wish that Sony would release a stripped down lightweight version. I know they won't, but the original a7 is noticeably smaller than the second generation. Given many of Sony's lenses are so large, and 3rd party lenses require an adapter, there's not much difference between cameras like the d750, a99, or 6d over the a7x second gen. If sony released smaller lenses, that would help, but the most recent crops of lenses are quite large (all 3 GMs, Batis 85, 70-200 f4, etc.)

I know I am in a minority, but loose the IBIS, rear LCD, give me a slightly larger battery and keep it under 500g. That would be lovely.

Steve, I was being sarcastic in my response to the comment about Fuji making their new camera large enough to include a shutter unit...

Rich, you forgot the diesel generator and long extension cord to charge up the power supply...

Without that, it's just more dead weight to carry around once you use up the initial charge.

Right...you can cherry pick to make things look big...but here is some reality that I use during travel:

A7R with battery: 465g
Sony 28mm: 200g
Batis 85mm: 475g
Batis 25mm: 335g
Loxia 21mm: 304g

The 6D by itself is 770g. I can put the Sony 28mm onto the A7R and still weigh less than the 6D without lens. I can put the Batis 25mm onto the A7R and again weigh less than the 6D and in fact I can put the Loxia 21mm onto the A7R and again weigh roughly the same ad the 6D.

That to me is big savings in weight with lenses that produce world class images.

I've used a 5D2, 7D, 1D2n extensively and I know what it takes to haul them around all day with big lenses hanging off them. No thanks...been there, done that...never going back.

Love the approach I've been seeing from the like of Fuji and Sony with their focus on more compact systems.

Loxia is 400g, not 300g. Wish it were 300. Also, the new a7 models all have IBIS, bumping them up to 600g+...so if you stick with a first gen model you get a real weight advantage, but current and future bodies forget it.

Yes...the extra weight and more importantly the price of the A7R2 is why I am still shooting the A7R. Bottom line for me is I can carry my A7R with my choice of lens on my wrist all day without fatigue...could not do that with my DSLR's...at least not without a bunch of discomfort.

Now the GFX looks like a great landscape camera where for me weight is not as much of a concern since most of the time I'm carrying it on my back and shooting with it from a tripod...never would be lugging around my wrist for a full day.

I dig that. Know what this thread really makes me appreciate? The RX1 series. Hopefully Sony downer make it bigger in any way in upcoming models...

Wow... exact same weight as enough Sony batteries for a weekend of shooting!

So, did anyone else happen to click on B&H's site when they had the GFX preorder up in the banner? There was no pricing and the pre-order button went to a dead link, but I think someone's getting ready for tomorrow.

I don't think I will pre-order, but I will be taking a serious look at this system once it becomes available.

So, in the Fujifilm mini MF GFX 505 thread...

... we're now having a debate about Sony versus Canon.

Thanks for your contribution here Dan. Do you have anything of substance to add?

If you would actually read the discussion...its all about compact size and the trade-offs versus bigger DSLR systems...which has a lot to do with the GFX which is a compact MF mirrorless camera and Sony which make compact mirrorless cameras.

As much as I want to pre-order, I still have unanswered questions about interoperability with the Actus and other adapted solutions. I can't imagine Cambo won't support the camera, but if they don't, then about 75% of my reason for lusting after it evaporates and I'll be looking at digital backs again.

Still, we are getting closer to getting those answers, and hopefully we'll see some real world reports from early adopters here.
