My uneducated observation is that things are not yet critical enough for Canon to revolutonise what they are doing - though I would think they're feeling some pressure and must have some concept cameras cooking; next gen. hydrids.

Guys, come on. It's the newest sensor in its class but not the best.
Best being defined as
I haven't seen what the base iso for the 5D4 is yet. Where you set the base influences my expectation of high vs. Low iso performance. Given the DR being as close to the 80D it is ... I'm wondering if they kept it a bit higher than the 80D.
Best balanced ... may not = most DR. Given the balance perspective of the 5D philosophy, that may be a decision that is in play.
That, and we are back to the real need to have the most DR.
Sensors are today's film ... imo, it is a bit naive to think that DR considerations Are the most important aspect and that DR defines it. I'm curious to learn if they changed the color response the way they did in the 80D. Seeing that spike in Red channel DR suggests something might be different there also.
Personally, I'd like to see a sub-50 iso version, but the market isn't there yet.

I never said it wasn't good enough, I never said it was bad, but all three of us know for sure that Canon *wanted* to make it the best in its class and would've if they could've. Stop giving me a hard time.
You said it is "embarrassing." That's what makes no sense to us, even if we presume that your vague "not the best" description is correct.
Again (and again and again and again...) these are very, very good cameras and whatever defines "best" camera includes a lot of things in addition to DR and the DR of all these cameras is really excellent and...
