Man you guys are killing me. I've had my radar trained on this lens since its release, but I have enough lenses covering 35mm focal length that I've resisted so far. That may soon change. A couple of questions.
I currently use a CV 35/1.2 vII as my fast manual focus walkaround 35mm. I looks like the ZM 35/1.4 is about 90 grams lighter. I've always felt the lens was dens and somewhat front-heavy. How does the ZM feel in terms of handling on the Sony A7II series bodies?
I sometimes bust out the ZF.2 35/1.4 when I'm willing to deal with the weight, bulk, and nose-heavy handling. The rendering is so special to me, but I don't really like hauling it around. On my original A7, it pretty much necessitated using a tripod foot on the adapter, which was a pain for vertical composition. To me, the ZM seems to have crisper in-plane qualities with less SA, but the bokeh leaves something to be desired, at mid-distances anyway. Would those of you familiar with both lenses agree with that assessment?
I'll probably have to sell both to justify the ZM, but it certainly seems like a great all-rounder at 35mm. My travel kit would then boil down to FE16-35, ZM35, FE55, CV90/3.5 with two bodies. Sometimes less choice is more ...Show more →

She's beautiful and sweet but can be quite vicious when I get a GAS flare-up. That's why I need to sell some lenses or we'll have to increase the purse and shoes fund

I'm sad to inform that Hubert Nasse passed away yesterday. He was the designer of all Zeiss MTF and testing equipment. The quotes you posted on this thread were probably written by him.
First I've heard this sad news. Thank you for posting. In found memory of the Zeiss Master:

Well Chris . . . We'll just have to keep tempting you. I've been looking at this lens since it came out and finally gave in to my GAS!
Same here. I have admired this lens, and been worried about it quirks, but this thread put me over the edge. I just ordered it as well.

Glad you did . I know you will like it. A lot of talk scientifically on this lens but have to say in real world I'm damn impressed. Like many I have been watching this lens for a long time. I just needed a little arm twisting. Also as you know Steve I have tried everything in 35 and I loved the RX2 but it honestly just could not fit in my system body well enough plus using flash was not exactly fun. End of day I actually like this lens better as I believe as good as that RX2 is this just has more kick to it plus it's a 1.4 so yea not cheap but with the Tech Art it's really fun to shoot. It's my new lens cap lens. Btw someone was selling a new Tech Art on the board not sure it's still around.

Another one bites the dust!
After showing my first samples to Guy (comparing to the RX1RII), he immediately sold his RX1RII, got this lens, started this thread and caused a lot of marital problems for many FMers...
I was quiet about it. The blame is on him!
Initially I decided on this lens to use mostly at wider apertures but after I tested at infinity distances, it became my 35mm for landscapes as well.
Another fact that many might be missing: The 35/1.4 ZM is a new design and was released September 16, 2014.

Oh yea just shift the blame.
Truth be told I'm probably on a lot of spouses black list. Lol
Honestly I do get excited but it has to be really good or I say very little. I never want to stear folks wrong. I have a pretty good track record on this stuff. Than I got friends twisting my arm too. Lol

Bob so what's your first impressions since you have had it a day or two. I'm sold on it but love to hear fresh thoughts and BTW Fred and I have discussed this lens at length privately and we really have the same conclusions but more importantly the same usage thoughts. Love to hear yours if you don't mind.
Guy, I'm very excited about this lens! I need to shoot it more. I'm just arriving in San Diego for long weekend so I'll be doing more shooting. The lens excites me as much as when I got my first Zeiss many years ago. It was a ZE35/2. I bought and sold that lens a couple of times. This one though is a keeper. More to come!

Hi Guy,
You, Fred, and Bob are just the latest to highly recommend this lens. I was a Johnny come lately buyer and reporter on this lens and I puchased mine in November of 2015. Many reported on this lens much before me including Edward Karaa, Philippe (Philber), Jack (Jako), and Greggf and they had without question recommended that I purchase the lens.

No question been following threads for a long time but it was mostly about modifying cameras too which I'm not willing to do to my primary camera. A second camera or when this one gets replaced , maybe but having the Vc 15, Loxia 21 thanI would only be doing it for this lens so its not making a lot of sense for me. Having a bunch of wide leicas and Zeiss in M mount than I would.Im just reporting what it does on a stock A7rII which seems very limited in conversations.
I just missed the sale of a mint condition one over on POTN. Now the search continues. Thank you Guy. This lens looks amazing. Is it noticeably soft wide open?

Personally I can't wait for a Loxia version to be released. Tweaked for the Sony sensor, native mount, with EXIF ... hmmm!
You may be waiting indefinitely on that one. Sony and Zeiss tend to avoid competing against one another at the same speed and focal length. So we have the Sony ZA 35/1.4, the Zeiss Loxia 35/2 and the Sony ZA 35/2.8. I don't think Zeiss will compete against the ZA 35/1.4 with it a Loxia 35/1.4 (even though one is AF and the other MF). I could be wrong but that's what I suspect.
Tend to agree not going to see a Loxia 35 1.4. Be nice but if anything it be a Batis 35 1.8
