Wow, Fred! And I thought the M-Rokkor 40/2 was small. Images look nice and sharp. Can't wait to see some outdoor scenes. Very cool!

I had tried this lens before with the CV close-focus adapter but hated the MF feel.

TAP gave a new life to this lens and AF is snappy along with image stabilization. It's not very fast but it's sharp wide open. (I think just as sharp as my Sonnar 50/1.5c at f/2.8)

I remember the corners didn't look too great until about f/10 at infinity but I will test it again. I bought it used at the buy and sell board and highly recommend it in conjunction with TAP.

Exactly how I feel about the M-Rokkor 40/2. Not quite as small but I didn't like MF on the A7r2. It just felt awkward. With TAP, it's a wonderful little powerhouse. And also with TAP, reducing MFD when TAP is extended makes the lens even more attractive.

Anyone know how it compares to the tiny little voigt 1.4/40 at f2.8 and below? If the 1.4 is as good, it might be an alternative that can be used at 1.4 and 2 sometimes (i.e. When the subject is dead centre in its limited zone of wide aperture sharpness))

Another option if you don't want to map a button is to change Priotity Set in AF-C & AF-S in the menu to "Release" so you can manual focus and release the shutter even if the TAP hasn't confirmed it. Probably not the best method, but it works for me.

I find it fast and convenient to map the Focus Hold feature to the Center Button, focus on subject, press the Center Button with my thumb to hold focus, re-frame as desired and press the shutter with my index finger. The TAP auto focus disengages completely with the Focus Hold feature as long as the button is pressed. Not exactly manual focus but works for well for off center subjects.

I use rear button to focus and once achieved I just let go recompose and use shutter button to shoot.

You'd have to be using AF-S for this to work, wouldn't you?

Like Guy, I also use the rear button for focus. I use it almost always with AF-C. Sometimes (not often) when I release it. in order to lock then recompose, I can tell that at that second the focus is not completely precise, so I will repeat it. Most of the time it works for me, though.

I think if you are using back button focus AF-S makes most sense.
With AF-C, especially handheld, it makes most sense to move the focus box into the exact position required for the composition, and then use shutter button focus as that will compensate for last minute movement of you and/or the subject (especially at portrait or closer distances)

If I use AF-S it's on a tripod, with the focus box also in final position. But I prefer MF in this case.

I never use focus and recompose. Sure at infinity it's fine; but at closer distances you will get increasing focus errors. Perhaps not in many cases ones which mean your intended subject is obviously OOF, but you will take a resolution hit.

Thank you so much! I was at a complete loss as to how one could simultaneously implement back button focus plus AF-C as well as focus and recompose. Your advice is most pertinent to me since I'm invariably working at closer distances. We're rapidly approaching the point at which I owe you dinner at a restaurant of your choice.

Just to let everyone know, my TAP has begun to sag with my ZM lenses, in that when the lenses are mounted, they are able to be wiggled up and down. I tried tightening the screw in the rear bayonet as some advised here, but this didn't help much.
The issue started in September has has gotten progressively worse.

I bought the adapter when it was on pre-order in March and had it delivered early in May I believe.

I have contacted Techart support and sent them a video of the lenses wiggling when mounted, but after a few email exchanges and then asking where I purchased it ( I bought from their UK website) , I've not heard a response.

I have bought a spare adapter to use, but really want to get my main one fixed. I will let everyone know how this progresses.

The wiggle even happens with light lenses like the 50mm Sonnar ZM.
I can even wiggle the front M mount flange without a lens even mounted. Just pushing on the top of the lens mount and it moves back and fourth with little effort.

This is throwing off focus whenever it shifts due to camera movement, as I shoot my lenses wide open mainly. A light touch to the lens or moving the camera around shifts the focus because the mount is wiggling/ shifting out of place.
Hope to get it sorted soon😰

It may also pay to check the small screws that hold on the front cover - looking from the rear, these are deeply recessed and are positioned either side of the label with the serial number. These are the screws that gave out on mine, and I had noticed similar wriggle on mine before they let go, but not realised the significance of it. My replacement TAP has no wriggle at all, but I have considered putting some loctite on them to ensure that it doesn't happen again. John.

Hi Fred,

I don't have a full account to upload at the moment. However, if you PM me an email address, I can easily send it over. It's only a few megaalbytes in size.

Regards,
Chris

No worries Chris. I thought the video was on youtube or similar site already.

We should add a maintenance section for the TAP FAQ. Like checking if screws are tight and also preventative measures to ensure a long run for the adapter.

Since the Leicaist Nikon G to Leica M adapter has no aperture control ring, does this mean that you either have to use the lens on the TAP fixed at maximum aperture or, alternatively, mount the lens on on a Nikon DSLR, set an aperture vial the dial on the camera, remove the lens, mount it on the Leicaist adapter, and use it on the TAP at the chosen aperture?

If it's like any other Nikon G adapter, there's a ring to move the aperture lever in Nikon G lenses.

I've got this going on as well, just noticed the lens moving up and down. I will check and see if there are obvious screws loose.

Just an update on my TAP wiggle issue, Techart have asked I send it to them Hong Kong in return for a replacement being sent out. I'm happy Techart is willing to issue a replacement for my defective one.
