Has anyone tested the Voigtlander VM 40mm f/2.8 Heliar on TAP?

I used to have this lens with the VM Close focus adapter but found it to be very troublesome to focus.
Great sunstars and Voigtlander look with this lens.

Has anyone figure out how to set TAP in macro mode for manual focus?

I know you can use "f/40" (stay at close up) when changing from AF to Manual Focus but I was wondering if there is another way to make TAP go all the way to macro while using aperture setting "f/45" (stay at present position, which is the default parking mode)

Can't you just focus on something very close, so the TAP extends, and then switch to manual mode?

Is that what you mean?

Yes, covering the lens or focusing on something very close will bring TAP to an extended position but it's not all the way out. To see it all the way extended, I have to change the aperture to f/40 and switch to manual focus. Like this, TAP extends all the way for the closest macro...I was wondering if there was a way to extend TAP all the way without resorting to changing aperture settings...

Techart is now offering a Leicaist adapter for Nikon G (and earlier) lenses for the TAP.

Has anyone tried?

Since the Leicaist Nikon G to Leica M adapter has no aperture control ring, does this mean that you either have to use the lens on the TAP fixed at maximum aperture or, alternatively, mount the lens on on a Nikon DSLR, set an aperture vial the dial on the camera, remove the lens, mount it on the Leicaist adapter, and use it on the TAP at the chosen aperture?

In terms of auto focus, the TAP works better with the Heliar 40mm f/2.8 than any other lens that I've tried, perhaps because it is very lightweight with no moving elements. Having said that, the Heliar 40mm, in my opinion is a special purpose lens...soft below F8 but it does have a unique quality for certain types of portraits or candid shots. I've used it in clubs or about town in the evening as it is compact and not intrusive and find that it adds to the ambiance of the image in certain situations.

I have been wondering the same thing. Any good way to do this?

Thank you. I love the rendering I've seen from it, and appreciate your input a lot. The plan is also to get something else in the 28/35 range. I just want it because it looks tiny, and fun. Esp. since I can throw it on a Hawkes adapter as well with the NEX 5 and have almost a P+S size combo. I also have the Canon FL 55/1.2 so I think the spacing will work well. Also, welcome to the forum, it's a good place to be

Frankly aside changing setting aperture to f/40, I don't see any other way to get the TAP to extend fully to macro position.

I had exactly the same difficulty with focusing and promptly sold my copy. But, based on Bradford's experience, the TAP solves that problem. Looking forward to seeing some TAP + Heliar 40/2.8 pictures.

I just got one and will post about its performance on TAP.
Best,

I promised I would report back on whether the Tripod Ring for the Canon 70-300L will fit on the Zeiss Apo Sonnar 2/135 so that TAP can be used on a tripod (allowing TAP to move the camera rather than the lens, which is too heavy.

I was going to buy a cheap Chinese copy, and then I found one in my gear cupboard dating from my Canon days!

But sadly the answer is no; it's just bit too small, even if you strip out the lining (which is not a good idea anyway in terms of the potential to scratch).

Back to the drawing board...

Bummer! Sorry to hear that. I wonder if it would be feasible to have a slightly scaled-up replica of the Tripod Ring for the Canon 70-300L designed and manufactured by a 3D printing service? Given the variety of objects that have been created using this technology, there should be no doubt about its ability to support an A7R II, TAP, Nikon F -> M adapter, and the Apo Sonnar 2/135. Though the cost of making just one or two might be prohibitive.

Ah well, at least I didn't buy one!
Yes I thought about the 3D printing idea. I might be able to find someone on campus to scan in the Canon and mess with scaling - in which case the printing itself might not be prohibitive.

But before then it might be worth looking at thicker tripod rings for other cameras; a rubber shim will work if it's too large.

Or just use the APO-sonnar manually!

I actually think that the right solution for 135 is two lenses: a future GM or Zeiss native AF lens for portraits, and a future Loxia which is a lot like the Leica APO-telyt f3.4 for landscape and bushwalking (or just give in a get an APO telyt which is as good as the APO sooner at f8; but its less good at wider apertures and costs double the not in significant prince of the APO sooner which makes me balk...

Is the TechArt Pro app still available that permits you to change focus lengths?

I cannot find it for Android or IPhone.

Links greatly appreciated!!!!!

Whereas the firmware updater is provided in both Android and iOS versions, the focal length app is only available for Android. Download the .apk file to your Android device and install the app. Instructions for using the app to change the focal lengths are provided in the Techart PRO FAQ. Look for "How do I set focal lengths other than the default ones listed above?"
