I've got the FE 35 1.4, and was actually thinking of replacing it with the CY 35 1.4.. How do the two compare in size / weight? Do you think it's a feasible replacement for the FE when used with the TAP (I'm not too concerned about super fast AF..)
I was also thinking of going a little crazy and picking up the Nokton 35mm 1.4 to have a tiny fast 35mm to go with the Sonnar C 50 (and then keeping the FE 35 1.4).. Haven't done too much research on that yet, but was a little concerned I'd be disappointed if I was expecting CY 35 1.4 performance out of it.. ...Show more →
My immediate thought was that, if super fast AF isn't an issue, then the C/Y 35/1.4 is definitely a feasible replacement for the FE 35/1.4.
Without hood or caps, the FE 35/1.4 weighs 633g (22.3oz) whereas the C/Y 35/1.4 (with TAP and Leicaist C/Y->E adapter) weighs 814g (28.7oz). So the C/Y combo is definitely heavier.
The FE is slightly longer and wider than the C/Y (72mm vs 67mm filter size). Practically, though, they're of a similar size.
I didn't experience any problems with AF speed for the C/Y + TAP combo even while shooting in the late afternoon / early evening. However I was always conscious that I needed to support the camera and lens properly because the C/Y is close to the maximum 700g (without adapters) that Techart recommends.
The FE is probably sharper wide open and better corrected for aberrations than the C/Y. But the C/Y has "the look". I've had the FE since it was released but never really took to it. If I had to choose between the two, I'd keep the C/Y.
I wouldn't think that the Nokton 35/1.4 is even remotely comparable to the C/Y 35/1.4 (there are lots of reasons that The official Zeiss 35/1.4 thread has run to 130 pages, but the main reason is the C/Y 35/1.4).
