Should I feel stupid now that I still prefer to use my M lenses with manual focus...?

And that I still use a $15 M-mount/NEX mount adapter piece for Leica M lenses 100x this adapter value?

Seriously, I think the Techart adapter is a good piece of innovation and might be useful for some photographers.

Yes, manual focus is what these lenses were designed for but it seems that with a press of a custom button, you can still manual focus the lens with this adapter. So, it just adds more versatility.

Thinking through this=== The Z motion the adapter uses to focus has to be a bit different than the movement of the elements when manually focusing....Will this result in more distortion?

I wonder how this is going to affect battery life

Fred-- how many 50mm lenses will you have after the 50mm 1.5 Sonnar?

I've been using mine for ~3 weeks now. Battery life takes a hit especially with heavier lenses. My Noctilux on auto gets ~150 shots from the A7rII. But that's at the upper limit of what the adapter can handle. With lighter lenses there isn't much of a difference between the adapter and the Sony FE lenses.

And yes it works with face detection. Distortion-wise haven't really noticed anything, but performance will suffer with floating element lenses at close (<1m) distances.

Worth mentioning again that you can AF most any MF lens with this adapter - just get an adapter to M mount and you can AF your manual LTM, Canon FD, Nikon F, Olympus OM, Pentax K, etc lenses on your Sony.

I've read that mount-specific Techart adapters are "required", though some have reported third party adapters working.

Can anyone point to a list of specific adapters that are known to work with specific mounts and this AF adapter?

Do you have a link to that?

The adapter doesn't know or care what lens is attached to it - as long as the FD to M adapter (for example) fits, it should just work. That's what I've seen so far from reviewers, but I'm certainly not an authority on this adapter and don't even own one.

I think I read it on the manufacturers page and the other linked thread (about this adapter) noted on the first page of the thread.
Are you saying it should work with any dumb adapter?
If so, how does that work?

I believe it's not required to buy their add-ons, at least for most lens brands.

Here are the third party adapters that are compatible with TechArt Pro.
LR-LM (Leica R to M), PK-LM (Pentax K to M), OM-LM (Olympus to M), M42-LM, C/Y-LM and Nikon-LM

These still work but need a little mod:
N/K-LM (Nikon F to M), FD-LM (Canon FD to M), CRX-LM (Contarex to M), EOS-LM and MA-LM (Minolta A to M)

Source is dpreview.

I'm pretty sure it works with face detection. (definitely not EyeAF yet)

So, with wide angles and slower tele lenses like the 85/4 ZM or Contax 100/3.5, face detection is all that's needed.

Face detection definitely works as I have one for months now. So far, only my CRX to mount adapter for my Zeiss Planar 55/1.4 Contarex does not fit the Techart adapter as the adapter is a bit chubbier at the base as it has a ring that control the aperture of the lens.
It has been working well as advertized and AF speed is reasonable but then again, MF is so easy o the Sony that I don't use the adapter quite as often as I thought I would. Handy when I pass my camera to some friends for group photo though

It is. The idea of Contax AX is now achieved merely on a thin adapter.

Now this is all set for Leica M lenses so no adapters . Trying to learn more about these. IHave not been following. I have a Zeiss 35 1.4 ZM coming tommorrow. Yea I finally broke down and bought one. Little arm twisting from our fearless leader.
I have a casual wedding to shoot next week . Should be a fun lens

Yes, exciting innovation. The great news is that TechArt seems to be releasing firmware upgrades for this adapter. The current version is 3.0.
As far as I can tell, any manual lens can be adapted and have AF but there are some limitations.

The weight limit seems to be 700 grams but I wonder how it would work with my 900g C/Y 100-300mm.
Perhaps holding on the lens as support and the let the adapter do the focusing would work for heavier lenses.

@k-h.a.w posted his finding here. Very helpful info.

I'm getting the adapter on Thursday and will test it with: 50/1.5C ZM, 35/1.4 ZM, 85/4 ZM, Leica 90/2.5, Contax 100/3.5, Contax 35-70/3.4 and Contax 100-300 lenses. I'm expecting it to perform better with lighter and faster lenses.

The additional benefit of the adapter is that if you move the focus ring to minimum focusing distance, you can AF to lens quite a bit closer than its MFD which is really useful for Leica M which is mostly restricted to 0.7m or further. On lenses with .3-.5m MFD, it is even more fun.

The TechArt Adapter WILL EAT your camera's battery life when not in use. It's best to remove the adapter after each use.
It will drain that battery as if the camera is still on and the motor is still moving.
However, while it is on, I've noticed no difference in bsttery drainage over a native FE lens.
It's just that the motor continues to drain battery even without the camera being on.

If anyone else have this adapter, please comment. Thanks.

Mine comes Thursday as well. I'll be testing with some voigtlanders and I picked up a fotodiox Leica R to M adapter for my Leica R 28/2.8. Can't wait to give it a try.

That's the first time I hear this. Perhaps your adapter is not completely turning off? Do you have firmware 3.0?
Someone who already has the TechArt Pro could test this out. When I get mine I will test it.

Wow.. could be a big issue. Not sure why this would happen though.

Looks like we should start a use thread on this adapter this week as it seems a lot of us are getting one. I almost bought one used but I decided to buy new in case I wanted to return it . But there is one on the board if someone is looking . I'm also worried if it's for me or not but certainly want to try. But I am very excited to try the ZM 35 1.4 as my poor RX was shipped to a new owner today. Miss it already but I just need to be interchangeable in my whole system. This looks like fun

Looks like we have to keep a eye on this. Maybe put in fresh charged battery overnight and check it in morning.

I would be more than happy to test the new adapter on your ZM 35/1.4 . . .
