comparing lenses never really bothered me.
and especially if we are talking about shooting outdoors.
they may be designed for different purposes
58, 85, 105, 135, 200
but in the end, they are all just tools, like paint brushes (for example), that can be used in any way the artist sees fit.
we are very lucky to have a few really special tools on both sides of the fence:
50L 85L 135L 200L
58G 85G 200G
REALLY psyched for nikon to give us (what I think will be a special) 105 or 135 now, the 105E.
for many of us with the 58, when you own the 58G, you really don't "need" 85, or "want to need" the 85... so the 105 makes sense.

1) COMPRESSION PEOPLE!!! It is a thing. 58 is not 85 is not 105 is not 200.
2) This thread title is like clickbait. Let's change it to something more accurate and then start over the image thread when this 105 is actually released. My $0.02
DID YOU HAVE YOUR MORNING COFFEE TODAY BEFORE GETTING ON FM?

Similar? Please, I already have a vision of shots I want to take! :P They will be better than some test shots!
Half of Nikon's "test" shots are terrible (referring to street photographers)
Nikon should have given you one of the 105 1.4s for testing and making sample images. Going by your 58mm images, we'd have a far better idea of what this lens can really do in the right hands....

Shouldn't some pro's have received some early copies and put out some reviews soon?
That's what I've been hoping for. The sample images Nikon has released aren't exactly stellar compared to some of the stuff that I've seen around here of late. Surely, a number of lenses is already out there in the hands of the top pros. Maybe Nikon has watertight NDAs in place to stop images being published ahead of the release date.

Counter-productive if true, I think, since the lens has officially been announced.
Such a major lens announcement coming ahead of upcoming major trade-shows to the surprise of most makes me wonder if it was to neutralize potential third-party announcement of a similar lens, or perhaps Nikon has more interesting announcements in the works for these shows.

The only edge Canon had left for me was the 135L, there really wasn't anything close to that focal length that was as good. Now with the 105E, I think as far as portrait lenses go Nikon and Canon are equals. With the lenses you listed, and add the 105E in there with Nikon and it's an amazing set.
Did this get posted here yet? There's a few samples with the 105 1.4 at a Shinedown concert. This shows exactly why I'm interested in this lens - the ability to shoot 1.4 at events with a bit longer focal length. People like to go on and on about razor thin DOF, but there's other reasons to shoot at such a huge aperture.

Nice samples in real world use. I totally agree. For me, 1.4 is sometimes about bokehlicious shallow DoF, but equally it's about a huge aperture sucking in millions of photons
Man, he talks some BS, but it's good to see some more samples. I get tired of this purist "natural light" bollocks. Natural light often looks hideous, so it needs bending/shaping/augmenting to achieve good results. We can't all wait around until the natural light is just perfect to shoot, so sometimes we have to fettle a little to make it right. Why aren't we seeing what the likes of Joe McNally can do with this lens?

Will we have the lens on the day that it's released? Meaning, will they pre ship sold orders?
B&H
Good question. I have never pre-ordered a lens before, I have pre-ordered camera bodies but I don't remember if they arrived on the release date or afterwards. Surely somebody here knows the answer.

The best bet is to just wait until they start delivering, then call up whomever you buy new gear from and they'll ship it out for you. Pre-ordered does not guarentee you get the first units in the store. I pre-ordered a D500 from a place I thought didn't get a lot of camera business and ended up cancelling the order and just ordering over the phone from my usual place.

From what is coming out, those are heavily PP and just about any lens could have produced the final image. Why don't they publish what comes right out of the camera with just WB correction, compression, and export sharpening.

Well I'll be getting my lens when it arrives at the store. They started a pre-order list and I'm the first on that list. So, when one arrives, I'll be getting it, no matter how many they get, I'll be getting the first one before anyone else gets theirs. But hopefully it arrives next Friday. That would be GRAND!
