The cat's eye bokeh balls in the background, and swirley, nauseous rotation of the out of focus area (lens defect) in the bottom of her coat (lowest 1/3 of the image) destroy a perfect artistic image.
Having just bought the Sigma 105mm 1.4 ART for F-mount here are my notes to you people in this thread:
It is twice as sharp as the Nikon version. Having used the 85mm 1.4G, and the 105mm 1.4G side by side I can tell you the 105 is maybe 10-15% sharper in terms of resolution. The 105mm struggles to resolve over 36 megapixels. The 58mm is worse than the 85mm 1.4G. The Sigma resolves an insane amount of detail compared to the Nikon.
Bokeh balls are almost completely round.
Light, color, and contrast are rendered almost identical to Nikon lenses.
Out of focus transition is much cleaner.
No swirley out of focus areas.
Made in Japan, and not Chinese garbage. In fact I would wager money that it's the cheap Chinese glass manufacturing from Nikon's entry level factory in China that is causing these defects in the lens.
The Sigma is still no 200mm F/2, but it's a wonderful lens for $700 in the 100mm~ range. Just don't shoot it directly into the sun.
