Ok, this lens is rockin'. It's very very close to the 200mm f/2, with 1/3rd the weight and bulk that people don't stare at you.
I think I am going to only buy f/1.4 lenses now .. ha ha .. 35mm and 105mm .. Nice !!!

Took a few photos after work - model was cold and grumpy, but I insisted I needed a warm human being to test the lens.

Having sold 28/58/105 - this is the only one I have regrets about.

I love it immediately .. sharp where focused and the focus falls off beautifully.
These downsized samples don't show how good it is .. I am sure I'll have fun with this lens.
Thanks to this thread!!

Don't miss 58 /1,4 in this list!! Although it needs a camera with fewer pixels.. in my opinion

Congrats on your new lens. Rendition looks great. Now, you just need a D6 to pair with it :Just kidding .

Nikon 58mm f/1.4? 🤔

I have a Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM which I like a lot.
But it doesn't have the telephoto compression which the 105 now gives.

D6 Are you trying to bankrupt me? 😅😅

Ha ha. It will balance well though, I imagine.

58/1.4 is an amazing lens, which I still love. Just now with 50/1,2 the new kid gets more attention but that does not mean 58/1.4 diminished any of its aura,

Luka

This probably will be another unpopular opinion as many of mine are, but here goes... Firstly, I have not used the 200/2 for some time so take this FWIW. At the time I did, I compared it to my 70-200/2.8 at 200/2.8 for my main intended use of increased distance portraiture on active children, I did not see enough gain to the 200/2 to justify the cost, size and weight. Moreover, the flexibility of being able to zoom in the 150 to 200 range seemed a bigger benefit than the shallower DoF. Keep in mind, sensors were smaller back then,

Just adding a concurrence with the 105/58 on mirrorless (Z7) is a huge improvement and moved me off of a 85 and 135. The 58/105 with either a 28 or a 35 is a "system" that work well together to capture 90% of my needs, a 70-200 zoom would round it out and we are done.

What camera were you shooting with before? And how is its performance compared to your z7 for these 2 lenses? Thanks.

I would invite you to review this thread I started a while back: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1720490/2#15787510

I was using the D850 and was frankly while loving that camera, was disappointed in the sub 2.2 aperture output of the 58, even more so than on the D810. I finally got around to trying the Z7 and there is no doubt that the mirrorless option improves the results on this lens. I had sold 3 copies before because while I loved the creativity of the lens, there are limits on how much resolution loss I can tolerate. The Z7 does improve performance on the 58 and the 105 but certainly a DSLR has loads of other advantages, I have made the switch to mirrorless though because of the 58 alone. It was that important to me because I find the 58mm FL to be extremely useful in my photography and love the design philosophy behind the 58 and 105. This pair does make the Nikon experience worthwhile in my view.

I find the 105mm 1.4 is a pain to lug around and I can't comfortably maintain lower angle positions without fatigue . Thought about going back to the Z 85mm 1.8s, it is a joy to use and I find myself having an easier time getting the shot. But I have to admit the results of the 105mm are so unique at times. A real dilemma.

@GoroMarijima - you'd be the first person I've seen posting to suggest giving up the 105mm for the 85mm f1.8S. Don't do it!!! Work out man! Kidding aside, both lenses are beautiful, but I do like me some 105mm bokeh.

The cat we rescued 3 years ago from a -17F winter night, is now the prince of the house, doing whatever he pleases.
The coat of black cats look reddish in light .. it's eerie but cool to see it
